Forums - General - I want an iPad-like tablet but not an iPad

So I want a tablet but I really don't want an iPad.  I think iPad's are incredibly neat but I already have an iPhone and it just seems like it would be a waste...also, it would be an iPad.

So does anyone have any suggestions on tablets currently out or coming out soon?

Try googling Samsung or LG tablets?

Archos are making a lot, too. I don't know if they still nickle&dime on softwares, though. Their hardwares are good and cheap.

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

Right now, there's pretty much the Xoom and the... um, Xoom.

And expect to pay a premium for any non-Apple tablet. Bet you never thought you'd hear that, did ya? Apple is coming way under everyone else's price point spec-for-spec.

Give it time, and I'm certain that most other tablets will offer similar performance at the same price. The Wi-Fi only Xooms are launching soon at just $30 more than an iPad 2, but come with the advantages of not being an apple product (expandable memory and will have flash soon).

I will probably bite on a tablet in a few months. I hope the non-Apple tablets come down, as I really want to support someone else. The Xooms have a lot more functionality (mini USB port, mini HDMI and so forth), so that should bode well for the future of Android tabs.

*edit*

Upon further research, I would note that the iPad cost is really relative to what it offers. For $499 you are getting Wi-Fi only model with 16gb of storage. Comparatively, the Wi-Fi only Zoom is to cost $539 and comes with more memory and more ports (HDMI/USB).

If you go to the 'premium' models of iPads such as the 3G with AT&T or Verizon service and 64GB of memory, the Xoom really beats it out handily. Apple wants $829 for their 64GB iPad 2 with Verizon or AT&T service. A Xoom with 32GB internally (expandable to whatever via MicroSD) is $599 with a contract (same as the iPad 2), or $799 without. So it is radically cheaper to own a Xoom. The real issue is that Apple disguises the cost by offering 7 tiers of iPad pricing.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

The iPad doesn't require a contract of any kind, Stickball and the 32GB iPad 3G is $729. That's a far cry from a $799 Xoom.

I'll give you that the Xoom has an additional storage slot. That's handy but the iPad outputs both USB and HDMI via the bottom adapter. That's hardly a selling point for the Xoom.

By the way, I am not an iPad owner nor do I plan on buying one. I think they're cool devices but not exactly geared for a power user such as myself. Plus, I have a 4.3" Android phone. I don't need anything more than that.

Well there are the Samsung Galaxy S tablets, and the Motorola Xoom.   I ill probably be picking up a Galaxy Tablet now

My apologies. When I saw that they listed prices for the AT&T/Verizon 3G pads, I assumed they required the 2yr contract.

Alternatively, you could always get the 2 year contract and save ~$129. My only thing about the bottom USB/HDMI addapter is that (and correct me if I'm wrong) you'd be only able to use one at a time vs. the Xoom having dedicated ports, which I would personally prefer.

I don't know about battery life on the iPad, but I do know that user reports of the Xoom are incredibly favorable.
