Forums - Gaming - 'Red Dead Redemption' and 'Minecraft' clean up at GDC Awards

The Independent

Rockstar's big budget blockbuster Red Dead Redemption and Mojang's rags-to-riches success Minecraft took the majority of awards at the 11th Game Developers Choice Awards in San Francisco on the evening of March 2, 2011.

Red Dead Redemption, a cowboy and western game for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, took Best Audio, Best Game Design, Best Technology, and the night's ultimate award, Game of the Year.

Minecraft, a low-fi collaborative construction game for computers (with mobile versions in the works), received Best Debut Game, Best Downloadable Game, and the Innovation Award.

The game isn't even finished and yet just shy of 1.5 million people have paid between €10 and €15 for early access, funding further development in the process.

Minecraft was the only game which was part of the GDCA's sibling awards show, the Independent Games Festival Awards, where it won in two categories - both the Audience Award and the IGF's Seumas McNally Grand Prize.
