My impression is most news is misleading...
Gaming news is the worst offender of the types of news I look at, but it's just part of a trend that I see as generally negative as news gets mixed up with other requirements such as competition for attention.
The worst thing about gaming news for me isn't so much it's deliberately misleading, although it often is, but that it's so often unintentionally misleading - just plain poor writing/editorial skills.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Problem is, that's exactly WHY they're not respected. People get excited when they see these kinds of headlines. When they realize that they were misled, it only leaves a bad taste in their mouth about that story, and they're a lot less likely to return to said site in the future. Do it over and over and over, and I know a disturbingly large number of people on a number of other sites (GameFAQs and IGN, most notably) who won't even talk to you if they know you're a VGC user - mostly because this site has NEVER really done anything to increase the quality of its news reporting.
There are pageviews, and then there's reputation and respect. I fully believe that a good reputation will equal a LOT more pageviews than an irritatingly misleading headline ever will. |
That's why they don't respect us? I figured it's because they see us as religious zealots, believing in numbers a man in England makes up as he pleases, which is part of the age-old internet bias against VGC, and having nothing to do with our admittedly spotty news reporting

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

That's the biggest thing that the Internet as a whole hates, yes, but the fact that VGC has one of the highest numbers of misleading articles is a major contributor to the "extra" disrespect. The way I figure it, we've already got the big issue of "numbers". We don't need to give 'em more reasons to hate us.

Just sites trying to get pages, nothing new. I used to be bothered by being disappointed by headlines, but by now we all should be used to it.
This is just the state of gaming journalism. Huge headlines with a barely 200 word story of nothing.
