Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft Research Shows The Possible Future Of Split-Screen Technology

Joystiq

Of all the projects teased by Microsoft Research's Applied Sciences branch, we certainly hope that this is the one that makes it to market. In the video demonstration posted after the jump, Steven Bathiche shows off a few of the interfaces and displays the company's currently researching -- the coolest of which is a "wedge" lens which allows the screen to generate and overlap individual images directed at your eyes, creating a holographic-esque image.

As radical as that sounds, Bathiche took the science one step further: The display can also track two viewers using Kinect, and show each of them a seperate image on the same screen. Considering the number of times we've had to strain our eyes to get our couch co-op Halo: Reach on, the possibility of split-screen gaming that doesn't actually split the screen is infinitely titilating

Very very interesting from a computer science point of view. In a gaming point of view, it could be a revolution? It can be, but I can't possibly understand how they'd project two different gameplay situations (lets just say two people running on different places on a map of an FPS), not only that, but not burn out the players eyes. 3D hurts bros. Overall, it looks awesome.

All of this, of course, is just my opinion.

Skyrim 100%'d. Dark Souls 100%'d.
Dark Souls > Skyrim.
Halo 4 is the best damn FPS since Halo 3.
Proud pre-orderer of 2 PS4's and an Xbox One.

Currently Playing: Dark Souls II, South Park
Playstation 4: MGS V GZ, Killzone: Shadow Fall, NBA 2k14.

That was really freaking cool.

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.

didnt sony patent something like this already.

i think they were using 3d tech to make nonsplit screen co-op

that was pretty cool.

Much better than that lightspace thing that I hope they've dumped.

Very cool tech. If they can implement multiviewer glasses free 3D using this tech for cheaper than the other multiviewer glasses free 3D that's nearly in production then they'll be on to something big.

For split screen, 2-player will be pretty cool, but what about 4-player?

Sony where using the l/r frames to display different images to each player, blocking out both lenses on the glasses alternately.

This pops up every few months. Isn't this oooold!?
