Volition wants to do FreeSpace 3
Posted: 08.02.2011 03:26 by JonahFalcon Comments: 0
Volition may be having fun developing Saints Row and Red Faction games, but what producer Jim Boone would really love to be doing is working on a new FreeSpace game; the last game in the series, FreeSpace 2, was released in 1999.

When asked by NowGamer if he has any interest in developing a FreeSpace 3, he gushed, “You have no idea. There is a group of people that would commit murder to do that game. The biggest problem that we have is… oh man, that game is so beloved. I did a bunch of missions for both games and it’s so dear to my heart I can’t even tell you. The problem we had was Freescape 2 didn’t sell as well…"

FreeSpace is a space sim offshoot of the multidirectional first person shooter Descent, and was the first game Volition ever developed after breaking off from Parallax Software. The games came late in the popularity of the space combat genre, which along with the flight sim genre is in deep dormancy.

When asked if a FreeSpace 3 could revive the genre, Boone replied, "I feel like there’s an opportunity there, but I’ve got no data to support that."

Personally, I would totally love to play a new Freespace.

Both Freespace 2 and Escape Velocity Nova are not only my favourite Space Sims of all time, but also some of my favourite games of all time. The Babylon 5 mods that both have are amazing, but Freespace 2 B5 mod tops everything. The missions where you control a White Star = Epic

OMG!! I can still remember the intro movie to Freespace crystal clear, it was so amazingly pretty at that time, also it was the first DVD-rom I ever had.

Wasn't Freespace released in 2 CD-Roms back in 1998? Or did you bought the Battle Pack in 2003? That intro is indeed pretty awesome

I still have my Freespace 2 box from 1999. The 3 CD's are pretty neat, as each has a different cover, one for each entity, the GTVA, NTF and the Shivans.

Well I would really like them to make a Freespace 3.

I'll go back and play the first two from time to time. The community mods for that make the game look amazing compared to how it originally looked.

I want them to do it too.  I love Freespace 2 - best space combat game IMHO - with awesome missions and a great story and narrative behind it.

I'd love to see Freespace 3.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Totally agree with you.

My favourite mission is the one where you make contact with the first SJ Sathanas. Since most of the times when you're up against the Shivans, you either fight the small fighters or the medium sized corvettes, the first time you actually see their Juggernaught class warship, it's like "OH Hell, I need to fight that????"

The mission where you assist the Colossus fighting off with the Sathans is pretty darn epic. Having to dodge all the Sathanas laser, sub-weapons and the plethora of fighters was exhilirating.

Awesome!

I love space combat games (Homeworld is still my favorite) but with THQ having Relic create Warhammer 40k and Company of Heroes, chances of them making another Homeworld is almost nil.

Freespace is second only to Homeworld, and if you do this Volition you have a good chance of reviving one of my most missed genres!  It might sound selfish too, but if this does well chances of me getting Homeworld 3 have just increased 1000x fold :)

I got a new PC with DVD-rom drive in 1998 and this was the first game I got for it and it was on 1 DVD-rom, I'm 100 procent sure.

To be honest I think that now would be the perfect time given the maturity o the console generation.

Tease.

I would hope that if they go through with it, they really ramp up the amount of ships and crap happening in the missions.

With the improved hardware and such, it would be cool to get battles like the one that happens in the introduction of Freespace 2 in real time.
