Forums - Microsoft - 360 to regain all it's lost NA lead from Nintendo

Next-Gen make a very detailed analysis of the November NPD report and noted that within a year the Wii has cut the 360's lead by a 1m units.  However at the end of the report they note due to Wii shortages the 360 could gain that entire amount back:

  • The Xbox 360 may extend its lead over both its competitors in December 2007 and January 2008. More specifically, Wii sales during Holiday 2007 are reminiscent of Nintendo DS sales during Holiday 2006: extraordinary sales in November and December, with almost no stock left in January and finally a rebound in February 2007. Should the Wii stock be constrained to near 1 million units in December 2007 and then very limited stock in January 2008 as the market restocks, Microsoft will have an opportunity to regain as much as a million units on the lead it currently has.

It's 7 pages, not for the faint of heart or time constrained.

Can Microsoft gain it's lead back?  Will this become a yearly event preventing the Wii from ever catching the 360 in NA? Thoughts?

    Around the Network

    Quick answer:

All Nintendo needs to do is increase production and they'll outsell the X360 long before Christmas.

This assumes the Wii's demand doesn't shrink.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

I don't expect that Nintendo's supply will be so short in in january that Microsoft will be able to outsell it. The monthly amount of produced Wiis should be high enough then.

In December, the 360 has outsold the Wii twice now. If the news about the big shipment next week are true, Nintendo should be able to keep sales in NA equal in December.

Because of those things, I don't see Microsoft getting this million back, but I haven't read the report (I am a member of the time constrained group) and probably don't know enough facts to claim to be right.

False. Microsoft's sales will plummet after December 25th. There won't be this magical January 2008 period where 360s are still being sold en masse.

Last year, the 360 went from 566k sales during peak december week (week ending the 25th) to 144k 2 weeks later. By the end of January, the 360 was selling 110k a week worldwide.

In comparison, Wii dropped from 600k (week of 25th) to 300k 2 weeks later. And it stayed above 200k/week until a lull after February.

And yeah, the Wii will catch the 360 in North America. Whenever they can start producing enough consoles, LOL.

No, Nintendo is releasing a lot of Wiis this week and.. though it probably won't be able to overtake the xbox360 yet it will likely do so in a few months.
