Thanks for pointing that out because so many here seem to think that EDD is just the xbox. Wake up.

The EDD profit IS NOT XBOX360 PROFIT. The EDD consist of PC games and online services,  Office, Windows Mobile and a whole lot of other stuff.

We have no idea of how much the x360 (and related items like kinect)  made on it's own and MS didn't say.

Great quarter result for MS regardless.

Wrong.

EDD consists of Xbox business in its entirety which includes Xbox Live. Other online services is in the online services division.

EDD consists of Windows Mobile which loses money (even before iPhone, Windows Mobile only had 1 profitable year)

EDD consists of the Marketing and Sales related expenses for retails sales of Office, Windows, etc.

EDD consists of other incubator products (not profitable) such as Microsoft Surface.

Look, the breakdown of the EDD division has been given multiple times (basically whenever a cluessless post like yours had shown up). Instead of typing complete nonsense, why don't you do the reasearch? Start with MS' own previous report which explicitly accompanied a mention that almost all parts of the EDD division were profitable...

Nobody questions the fact that the XBox part contributes to the overall profit of the division (mainly online revenues), however attributing it all to a single console is a but naive (and the fact that MS never gives the actual breakdown should give you a small hint).

Dont give me that crap.  I am deeply involved in one side of MS's business (not gaming) and no a good deal of thier people and other partners and have for a long time (about 20 years).  So my post is not clueless.  Some of the areas in EDD (Surface and WP7) I have relationships into the product groups so again I have a pretty good idea what I am talking about.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

Fun stats:

E&D division profit more this Q than it did for the entire of last fiscal year, massive gains.

MS has broken the $ 1 billion profit mark with only TWO Q's. The PS division has never posted higher than $950 million in any fiscal year since it began in 1995.

Lots of variables there, but it goes to show, MS E&D business model is one that is akin to a market leader.

That's ... profound.

I wonder what percentage of the profit comes from the online charge, that would be a pretty big variable.

Also, isn't the Playstation division only...playstation?  What does E&D contain?

There is no playstation division...they are all under SCE, which is more than just PS brand.  As for EDD, it has WP7, Zune, and other devices included, to included the Xbox folks ofcourse.

Xbox is driving this division...no question about it, and it's probably accounting for 80-90% of profits.  Regardless, people had no problem lumping it all together, when the division was losing money on alot of different things, all onto Xbox...

So what is Seecereferring to when he says a PS division, starting in 95?  I never thought that was a good idea, if only because I like the transparency.  I'm sure it's doing most of the heavy lifting, I just wish we knew how much.  And again, I'm curious as to how much of the large numbers are from online charges.  Has anyone attempted to estimate on the site?

Thats it with kinect and slim 360 I guess only Americans fall for 150 dollar webcam.

Unfortunantly, most gamers don't care about exclusives and the fanbase they will be losing mostly is the owners of both HD consoles.

The results look good, im happy with what we've got here. Obviously for the next few quarters they will aim to maximise profits and beyond the next financial year all bets are off as to what they might do.

Tease.

The PS division used to be by itself, but its part of a bigger division now similar to what MS has done with EDD.  Can't remember the name of the Sony division now, though, and my brief search efforts were fruitless.  Sorry.
