When I saw the title I knew it would mention dead space 2 lol.
Dead space games are about as scary as your mom sneaking in to your bedroom while you sleep and bashing pots and pans next to your head. Sure you'll get a jolt a few times, but it will get old, tired and FRUSTRATING really fast.
Also the fact you don't give a shit what happens to the characters in Dead Space, and you have save points and unlimited continues kills any scares or weight the game has.
If they were talking about Silent Hill 2 per say...there could be a good debate for this.

No, you can smoke a spliff while watching a scary movie and get completely freaked out, for example event horizon. In a game you just get lost running around in circles in a straight corridor to find out the next day you saved with 2 health left and no ammo.

Scary the first 4 or 5 times, but starts to lose it's luster

I'm playing Dead Space 2 right now and I can tell you its FAR scarier than Silent Hill 2 ever was.
And don't give a shit what happens to the characters in Dead Space? Are you kidding me? Isaac Clark is a FAR more compelling character than pretty much any horror game I can think of.
Its funny you even bring Silent Hill up to be honest THOSE are games whose characters you don't give a shit about, talk about generic.
