It seems like an incident like this seems to gain national (and international) attention about once a year, and (almost) always it is far more complicated than the initial knee-jerk reactions make it out to be ...

I suspect by the time this is over far more people will be asking "Why didn't anyone do anything when there were so many obvious signs?" than "Why did a 14 year old have a gun?"

thats probably it. wonder if the father was smart enough to take the kid to gun safety classes.

Wouldn't the more logical thing to say be: "Why did they give him a gun when there were so many obvious signs?"

This story is yet again another reason why people shouldn't be allowed to own guns without passing a psychological exam.

Aside of which how would that work?  His DAD bought the gun.

Besides what makes you think he'd fail a psyche test?  You don't even know the motive.  Chances are he came from an abusive family.  "Politest kid you'd ever know" and other reports of him having a regressed mentality?  Also apparently the police "made insignificant visits to the house before."

It'd be interesting to hear what those were about.

good point, but in this case the person undergoing the phych exam would have been the father, which might not have helped. private buying of guns to give to other people shouldn't be allowed imo, but i can't see any viable way of enforcing that.

Well I don't know how things are over there, but over here the dad would go straight to jail. If you're a gun owner it's illegal to let anyone else but yourself use your gun, and minors aren't allowed to even touch firearms.

As for the stress thing, well some people are more psychologically weak than others, and are more likely to crack. I'm sure that a psychiatrist could make that out.
