Don't Sony/MS/Nintendo just use NPD, MediaCreate/Famitsu, Charttrack/GFk etc.. to do the tracking for them? All seem to quote their numbers enough when releasing a statement. |
I think they do and don't use NPD ... If NPD says something they like, for example the PS3 is selling at a faster rate than the XBox 360 did, they will cite NPD and release a press release. Otherwise they will release their internal numbers regardless of whether they match NPD or not. An example of this is Killzone's sales numbers ... There is a forum post where a representative from Sony claims that Killzone sold more than 2 Million copies, yet there is no evidence of sales like this from any tracking firm. (With how poor initial sales were for Killzone, it would have to have amazing legs to make sales like this but the game falls off of the charts a couple of months after its release which implies that it didn't have strong legs). |
Killzone sold very well in Europe. The US is just one region not the world. |
Why didn't Sony announce it when Killzone became the third or fourth best Sony published PS2 game in Europe if it had sold so well? Why did Killzone 2 fall off of all of the top 20 PAL charts in the world months after its release when it was such a super popular game? Why is it that the only reference to its "Amazing" sales is a forum post and not a financial statement? |
I wouldnt say 2million is "Amazing" for a ps2 game. I think more interesting is the reason why you have to question everything SCE says?. |
In order to break the 2 Million barrier with how 'well' it sold in North America and Japan, Killzone would have had to sell 1.5+ Million units in Europe; with how few PS2 titles sold this well in Europe it would be a major accomplishment.
This isn't about questioning Sony, this is about questioning any claim which seems particularly unrealistic ... If Microsoft claimed on an interview in a forum that Viva Pinata sold more than 2 Million copies, or Nintendo claimed that Battalion Wars sold more than 2 Million copies, based on European sales I'm certain I wouldn't be the only person who called BS.
