I don't know how many times I've said Sony PR needs to shut up on this board. Let this be ++.

Sounds like whoever did this interview likes this site too...

Q: Do you guys have any projections of what you expect to sell this holiday season?

A: Sure. We expect to sell 33 million pieces of hardware across the three platforms. And that breaks out to 12 million PS 2s, 11 million PS 3s, and 10 million PlayStation Portables, and then we don’t break out software, but our forecast is 250 million units of software across those three platforms.

Q: And are those worldwide numbers, and that’s shipping numbers, is that right?

A: Worldwide numbers, and they’re sales, not shipment numbers.

Q: OK, but sales meaning that’s how many you get into consumers’ hands? Or does that mean you consider it a sale when it goes to a retailer?

A: We consider it a sale when it goes to a consumer.

Q: And that is for March 31?

A: That is correct.

Q: So Jack, that’s not Christmas numbers, that’s year-end numbers.

A: That’s correct. By the end of our fiscal, March 31, ‘08.

Ha ha, what a tit. This proves that Sony is definately talking about this fiscal year only too, because Tretton agreeing with the interviewer saying "it's year-end". And he clearly isn't saying total Life-To-Date for PS2/PSP. Well, maybe it doesn't prove what Sony thinks, but what Tretton thinks that Sony thinks.

With the exception of Phil, the man is obviously the most decent PR front man they got.

I'll take this opportunity to again offer Sony my services as a PR hack. I know I have no formal training, and I dislike Sony and hate the PS3, but if given the chance I will make Sony's PR infinitely more effective and infinitely less buffoonish. Especially given that I will do it for less than half of what they pay Tretton the value added to Sony's PR would be infinite. Sony should seriously consider how great that will work as a lead into fessing up to the fact that they won't be shipping or selling or whatever 11 million PS3's this year.

ROTFLOMA that is the most funniest post I've read this week

@Rukusa, I'll call Phil to ask him to do that, since he's a tall man, big feet, so large socks and therefore... a lot to stock That will keep Tretton's mouth shut for a while

Activision want to be the biggest 3rd party publisher and they cannot maintain that by making exclusive games. It would cost an insane amount of money for Microsoft to buy a Activision exclusive now and it won't change in the future based on these comments. Activision want to be the top dog, they won't achieve that by making exclusives. That's why you don't see EA/Activision exclusives and why they are the biggest 3rd party publishers.

Nothing will come of this. At worst it may cause a heated board meeting between SCEA and Activision, that will be all.

I agree.  There may be some apologizing involved in there, but an Activision/Sony conflict would be mutually damaging.  Neither company needs or wants that I assume.

In related breaking news, Jack Tretton is still a giant douche.

Seriously, that guy needs to shut the hell up. He continually makes an ass of himself.

As to the original topic: does anyone think this will actually have any serious consequences? Because I think Activision needs Sony and Sony needs Activision, and regardless of some rather embarrasing faux pas, I can't imagine this actually having an effect on corporate policies or planning on either side. Other than not liking each other very much, I sincerely doubt we won't see CoD5 on the PS3, unless Activision decides they'd rather skip on 700k+ software sales just to prove a point.

I don't think that's really the point. I don't think anyone seriously believes that this will drastically change Activisions view of the PS3 but one has to wonder:

How long is Sony going to allow one of their top Playstation execs continue to burn bridges and make an ass of himself to the media? Tretton became a liability long ago and like I said over a year ago, Sony needs to seriously consider putting a gag order on damned near everyone not named Stringer (he's the only one who consistently appears to have a brain in that company).

^agreed--every time they get out of the woods some CEO shoots off at the mouth and blammm--hey why are we surronded by trees again?
