Valve has confirmed the PlayStation 3 version of Portal 2 will feature cross platform play, allowing PS3 owners to play multiplayer games with PC and Mac users. 

At E3 2010, Valve announced the PS3 version would include Steamworks, a set of publishing and development tools that integrates, among other things, game updates and community features. 

Alongside cross platform play, PS3 owners also get persistent cloud-based storage of saved games, cross platform chat (PC/Mac and PS3), and a digital Steam Play copy of Portal 2 for PC and Mac at no additional cost by simply linking your PSN and Steam accounts. 

"We made a promise to gamers at E3 that Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 would be the best console version of the product," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "Working together with Sony we have identified a set of features we believe are very compelling to gamers. 

"We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases."

im pretty sure the free copy thing is universal, if I have the PC version, I have the Mac and PS3 version. Its how it is with most of their PC titles. If you have the PC version, you have the mac version.

I mean I can see which angle they're coming from, this is effectively like introducing competition to the XBL service, but on the other hand, ffs!

No, it's not universal. Buying the retail copy of Portal 2 PS3 is the only way to get it. Steamworks is not Steam.

There is no Steam for ps3, so you won't be able to log in your steam account on your ps3 and download Portal 2. 

Come to think of it, I haven't been on Steam in years. The only thing my PC was powerful enough to run was CS:S, so that's the only game I have, other than the crappy add on games I got with the CS:S package. Also someone gifted me Half Life 2, how nice of  him.

So the PS3 can essentially get cross-platform chat but not get cross-game chat?  Just goes to show how awesome Valve can be. 

no i believe you buy the PS3 you get an steam version free (for mac and pc) but not the other way around. So basically valve wants all owners of both ps3 and pc to buy the PS3 version of the game. 

yeah it does sound like a little gift to sony.

You let us do steamworks? then we'll even throw our PC gamers at you to buy our PS3 games.
