Forums - Sony - Why do these hackers give away their work for free?

Blackmail is such an ugly word. I prefer "extortion". The "X" makes it sound cool.

EVERYONE cares about money. Someway, somehow.

Well, they do it for Linux, and if you look at the Linux scene, you'll see plenty of people who give code for free.

What the OP says is true. These guys are just wasting their potential.

better blackmail with money than get nothing for your work. my point is, they accomplished something that can potentially earn them some cash but they threw it away.

1 - They don't sell their stuff becuase it is illegal to sell hacks for a console. It is perfectly legal to mod your own console, but I'm pretty sure you can't charge people for it.

2 - They don't give everything away for free. I've been in the iPhone hacking seen for a few years and many hackers charge (quite a bit) for hacked apps for the iPhone. It's gone to the point where there is a seperate paid store for hacked applications on the iPhone.

3 - They have their own motivations. For instance, the recent upsurge in PS3 hacking interest has come as a DIRECT result of Sony removing the Other OS (Linux) option from PS3. It completely backfired when you think about it, cause not only did people find a way to put Linux, they realized how flawed the PS3's security truly is.

yea i agree but that doesnt mean everything a person does is done for money

he may not want his hacking work to generate him anything, but he might still have a job he cares about cause he gets paid for it

its like people who make music for free, they just do it cause they want to

Everyday I'm hustlin'.

AFAIK Cydia store is for non aproved by apple apps, apps apple don't want in the app store, not for hacked apps.

The apps which are on cydia are apps which apple doesn't want to be on the iPhone. Many of them give you features which apple doens't want the iPhone to run. For instance, custom wallpapers and multitasking have been available through cydia for years (apple didn't have them till iOS4). Either way, I think these apps would qualify as hacked apps because nobody with a non-jailbroken phone can run them.

I can make face time calls on my regular 3G network. This is an app I paid for on Cydia. I wouldn't be able to use it had I not jailbroken.

I don't get it. I mean, you accomplish something that will open the gates to millions of dollars in pirated software, yet you don't ask anything for it.. you just give it all away and upload it on the internet for everyone to take, while you take the risk of legal action from Sony (which obviously has happened now). What the hell did he get for it?

I think it was a stupid idea to upload it. Here's what I would've done:

I would've contacted Sony about my discovery, but I wouldn't give them the specifics. I would ask for a sum of money so that I wouldn't divulge the information, or ask for a job in the company programming division. I'd get into a contract with them, so that at the least, I don't get jailed or something for what I did and at the same time I get a boatload of cash.

If that's too dangerous, I'd just sell my discovery to some pirated software maker or something and at least make a few thousand bucks. Better that than nothing.

These hackers are pretty smart at programming, but they're pretty stupid with business. For god's sake, at least get a few bucks out of the discovery! What was the purpose of all that hard work? Internet fame? Ridiculous. More people hate them than appreciate them for their work and there's a big risk for some jail time or a heavy settlement fine. Crazy. These guys should go back to college and take some business units.

Wow, people think hackers are the Devil for giving away their hacks for free, while the very Sony fans think on the hypothetical case of blackmailing Sony and even making money from pirating games.

Sheesh man :(
