To indict DCU is to indict the entire MMO genre. Which I would support you on- I'm just letting you know.

False. I have enjoyed plenty of Diablo 2 and Guildwars, plus I expect Guildwars 2 to be free to play as well.

MMOs don't require pay-2-play.

Diablo 2 and Guild Wars aren't MMOs.

Also, no free to play MMO will ever be as big or as polished as  game like WoW. Infact, all the best F2P MMOs are the ones that switched from subscriptions, like Lord of the rings online.

I'm tired of people saying $15 is normal...

the question is WHY! just because that's where MMOs started? Cell phones used to be as big as houses and cost $800 now you can get one as cheap as $15, LCDs used to run $1000 for the smallest size now you can get one at $100 and that's after only a few years... and guess what servers used to cost thousands of dollars even as recently as 2004 when WOW came out but now 7 years you can get laptops and PCs for under $300, and servers for under $1000.

That being said in this day and age servers are easier to maintain, they cost less to buy, their parts are cheaper and add that to the fact many games update their products via DLC... and they get compensated for those updates  by selling them, so any updates could have easily been maintained by micro-transactions to offset the cost. But even if they wanted to charge a monthly fee, why $15... just because MMOs started at $15 a month years ago? that is NOT REASONABLE today.

Why be a sheep and say that's what it always been so it's fair. The "why not" is because there is no valid reason for that price anymore... or maybe ever, who's to say it was even to offset any server cost and not just an arbitrary figure MMO companies pulled out their ass? The one thing we do know is, the economy is crap right now and servers cost less to buy and are easier to maintain so why not make it $5 a month just for those reasons.

Anyway the SOLE reason I did not and will not buy it is because  of the price. I can't afford $15 a month on nonsense but even if I could, after 7 years that's way too much

Each "Server" in a MMO games is typically made up of several very expensive rack-mount servers; and the ongoing costs of maintenance (hardware, software and database), support, bandwidth, and electricity are very large. Now, new technology can bring down these costs dramatically but these costs savings cannot be realized until years after a game has been launched, and would require significant upfront costs.

So not only does this title ask you to pay $15/month, but it also asks for 15GB of your HDD space.

1.) It's only $15

2.) Doesn't MMORPGs usually require a good amount of space to play?

No, the game is $60 to start, then you install 15GB, then you pay another $15. People whine about Live costing $60/year, including me, but $180/year for just 1 game is SO much worse.

Your 1st year of DCU Online will cost you $240. No defending that.

I have always felt that pay-to-play titles should be free to begin with. Free to download, then pay to play.

Why pay to get it and then pay again just to play? DCU Online is a ripoff and I love watching Pay-2-Play stuff fall on it's face.

As for your 2nd point. Like the article mentions, they have 50GB of space on a dual layered BD disk, why need to install 30% of it? PS3 isn't a PC.

How much do you think a year of Wow cost ? ( and how long have you been watching Wow fall on its face ? ??)

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

By the way the highest cost of a successfull MMO isn't the servers or the people needed to write the continual expansions.

It's actually the bandwidth cost for the game and the customer support costs ( Blizzard has over 500 ppls working on customer support just for the US and you don't want to know about their bandwith costs....).

The line coming out of the server building isn't your typical DSL line, at the level of Blizzard it's custom state of the art shit ( because the nerds really go crazy when their servers go down even a few minutes, I know I was one of them, typically if the server crash, players crash the forums a few minutes later by checking for updates and then all the gaming sites related to wow start to be real slow as the wow players start all surfing at the same time while waiting for the game to go back up...)

As for comparing with Free to play MMORPGS, lets take the example of LOTR online

They claim to have increased their revenue by a factor of 3 when they went free to play. Except guess how they make money ?

The game is free to play but they charge 15$ a month for VIP pass to get access to some of the more interesting content in the game. So much for free to play..................

great. 15GB is almost 4x my monthly cap (hooray 3rd world). by the time i finally get the patch, the next 15gb patch will need to be downladed.

I'm still interested in the game and the concept, and a monthly sub does not bother me and neither does the installed size, but if the OP is correct about needing a massive patch, DCU will just have to get stuffed.

bandwidth.. depending.. lol  bandwidth is more expensive for a free mmos than for pay to play, you download everything from a free mmo, with most pay mmos you get disks with most of the content.  once a player gets on the game bandwidth usage is significantly reduced.

as an example: blizzard spends like 50 million/year on upkeep (bandwidth, customer support, server maintenance)  for wow.  theyve been making about 100 million/month from wow.   their main cost is not upkeep, but then again i dont know if they release new content much anymore so they might just be banking all the money as theyve put the developers on new projects.

oh and btw, the patch is not 15 gb lol, the patch is like 2.5 gb ish, the rest is an install from disk, which, together with the patch comes pretty close to 15gb of hd space total

I don't see why anyone would trust SOE with MMOs after they jerked the Star Wars community around so badly.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

$15 a month? Am I the only one that finds that ridiculous, quite surprising when people bitch about having to pay for Live, some $7.99 or w/e it is in dollars whilst being prepared to pay twice as much for one game. I can't comment on the content of the DCU, but isn't WoW priced in the similar region or even lower a month? They really plan to infiltrate the PC MMORPG market with this price tag? Ludicrous.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

that's a LOT better than 15 lol. I might pick it up after all.

why so many complaining,

if you like this type of game and it might be good(i don't know),you get to play it on your PS3

that's good in my book and 15gb shouldn't be a problem for most or people that like MMO's
