No .....One..... Saw.....It. Absolutely..... No..... One

I saw it, I was just bored to tears by the end of it.  It's not that it was bad, it just felt like it kept going and going and going and going.

i like his comedy such as the office, but i avoid films with RIcky Gervais in.

It was dissapointing after the excellent Ghost Town, but it wasn't a terrible movie.

It was however rated 'Morally Offensive' by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops - http://www.nccbuscc.org/movies/i/inventionoflying.shtml

I remember once being shown a review of it on a fundamentalist Christian website, and when I say fundamentalist, I mean Fred Phelps style overkill fundamentalist.

In short the review was hilarious because of how badly the reviewer reacted to it. I can't remember the name of the site, but they also did a review of "I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry", which was one of the best things I've ever read.

So to answer your question, I know of at least one person got upset over it, that reviewer.

Well you've got to be "careful" with those sites, a lot of the more popular ones are hoaxes.

Yeah, I really liked it, I acutally think the downpoint of the movie was the invention of lying.  A fully truthful world where nobody lies really paints a very interesting world.

I watched it... and quite literally RIcky Gervais invents Christianity.

Of all the silly things churches get upset about... this went out of it's way to be offensive to religious people... and nothing.

He wrote 10 commandments on two Pizza hut boxes.

I found it funny as it's pretty hard to offend me outside of rape based joke... but I mean, i can imagine 9 out of every 10 people getting upset about it easy.

Is it just... nobody saw it?

No one saw it.  The controversial stuff wasn't in the advertising.  I did want to see it, but never got to it.  I am aware of those bits, and it looks more like modern religion, that really Christianity (in short what people think Christianity is about).  I found it interesting that it was a portrayal of a world without imagination, or people to see possibilities where everything is taken as fact.

I found it interesting also that the writer of The Golden Compass set out to turn Christian theology on its head, and no one seemed to care.  Contrast that with Harry Potter, which got popular.  I think where protests come from is that something in America gets popular, and draws a lot of youth.  At that point, the morality police come in and check things out and then makes noise if they can.  At that point, you get stuff like "Blame Canada" or "Trouble" from Music Man:

Historically, things like pinball and videogames got grief. D&D had its own. In Europe questions arose over chess (questions raided over the use of dice in some games, and also excess speinding of time and arguments that broke out). In America, bowling ever came under condemnation. Bowling went from 9 pin to 10 pin because of laws against it (it did also help the game though. But, it has to be popular with youth, the way rock and roll had been. I am sure people can name others.
