Their track record is exceptional. If you check history a bit, you will realize that it is not before Naughty Dog stopped developing the games that the quality of the Crash Bandicoot series faltered. They were not responsible for the lack of quality in the titles after Crash 3, as they didn't develop those. And the first 3 have been critically acclaimed, just like most of the games they developed after that.
So to correct what you said, they didn't really come a long way, their games have always been of excellent (if not outstanding) quality compared to the competition and the reviews and critical acclaims they continually receive is a testament to that.
