Forums - Sony - Impression of The Orange Box (PS3) so far

@ BenKenobi

Seriously should I buy this box for Ps3, i'm still doubting. I only played a demo of Half-life 2 and loved it. But hearing about the framerates and stuff...

The only reason to buy the PS3 version of The Orange Box is if you don't have a PC capable of playing it. And even then... buy a graphics card. :P

Hmm I would ask if they support keyboard/mouse on the PS3 (with adjusted difficulty level) but this is a sucky EA port so probably not.

BenKenobi,

I don't know the player limit exactly, but I know I've been in TF2 games with at least twelve people. Heck, I'm sure it's the same as the 360 with 16. Either everybody is hampered by the controller, or I just know what's going on with my experience on the PC because I've mowed people down with my trusty rocket launcher on my Soldier (mainly since I can't use my sniper with analog sticks).

As for all the games with the analog sticks, they all honestly stink with controls in my opinion. TF2 is pretty difficult as it requires the most twitch shooting and I'd wager that the bottleneck areas on maps (such as dustbowl) will be VERY HIGH kill spree's for gun turrets since it's very hard to check your surroundings and such. However, I've suffered in Episode 2 because I can't aim precisely and what would take a strafing back and fourth with a couple of bullets now takes a bit of damage and lots of bullets (mainly misses). Portal is pretty bad too because it's hard to keep control of looking around because going through a portal will readjust your view to horizontal so trying to throw out a portal spree to keep your momentum is pretty difficult.

Honestly, unless your PC can't handle it (even though the source engine scales back to weak hardware pretty well), I'd only recommend the 360/PS3 version of the Orange Box if that was your only way of playing it. I mean, the frame rate drops don't exactly make it an amazing port on the PS3, but it makes using the controller harder than frame rate drops with a mouse. If it had keyboard and mouse support on the PS3 (which I doubt anyway), that would lift any pain. However, I'm sure FragFX owners are probably enjoying themselves right now.

EP2 requires quite a bit of twitch aiming, especially as you get further into the game. In particular, the battle where they trap your car between the force fields is pretty fast and furious, and using the Magnussen devices requires precision and speed to be effective.

Well, I was finally able to at least beat Portal before I have to take it back. Obviously the mouse and keyboard would have made all the games less broken, but the games themselves are still awesome.

Portal is awesome and I'm digging the ending song.
