Forums - Sony - Will the PS4 be backwards compatible?

So the recent root key business got me thinking and then looking at another thread got me thinking even more.

As a joke, I mentioned the only way to fix the exploit would be to release the PS4 so that those unofficial official homebrew apps couldn't be ran but what if the PS4 was backwards compatible?

If this exploit really is a big deal and the PS3 is truly open, then if the PS4 is backwards compatible with the PS3 wouldn't it potentially suffer the same exploits?  If I can run self signed PS3 apps on the PS4 that the PS4 would have to think are official, wouldn't that leave the PS4 open to the same problem?

LOL, I was thinking of making the same thread :P

Unfortunately, I think the PS4 will not be backwards compatible because the keys are pretty much public and that would allow everyone to at least play pirated PS3 games on the PS4 from day one (I think)... and the only way to avoid that would be removing backwards compatibility :(

But I don't think that means they can also get the PS4 keys since it would be using a different hardware and a different security system and a different processor... right? or am I wrong? :S

OK, I'm starting to think this kind of sucks... if future PlayStations won't allow me to play PS3 games anymore then this is crap. T_T

I don't believe it would allow you to run PS4 games since I believe you're right that the PS4 would have a different key, but by allowing PS3 apps to run you would essentially be allowing an easy way into the PS4 security.  You would be running something that the hardware thinks is official so who knows what that would open up.

Its unfortunate. PS3 use to be the most secure but also the most open of the 3 consoles. You could install your own hard drive, play a lot more formats of music, videos, etc. There were also a lot more 3rd party accessories you could use. Unfortunately I think Sony will definately have the PS4 more secure and under control. They may go to the Apple/Microsoft route. Propitory hard drives, accessories, etc. Sony might also take away PS3 backwards compatibility because of this. Its unfortunate that people just couldn't be pleased with what the PS3 had to offer. Sure taking away linux was a bad move by Sony but out of the 3 current consolses it was still the most open. In the end the only people we can blame are ourselves or Geohot-which ever you prefer :)

Being backwards compatible doesn't necessarily mean that your system is open to the same exploits as the previous generation system; depending on how backwards compatibility is handled it may make it open to the same exploits but it is not necessarily the case.

Personally, I expect Sony and Microsoft's next systems to have an architecture that is based on their current generation hardware which will make it fairly straightforward to include backwards compatibility in these systems; for Nintendo, the modest performance of the Wii should enable them to include backwards compatibility through software regardless of the architecture they choose. While this (potentially) means that the mistakes made with the PS3 or XBox 360 could be duplicated in their next generation hardware, I suspect that they will put an effort to fixing these (as best as they can) and also trying to beef up security surrounding next generation games (so even if the same mistakes are exploited it only translates into current generation games being pirateable)

Maybe not backwards compatible with blu-ray versions but they could start to release PS3 games in PSN store that are signed with different keys (just like PS1 games in PSN store) or maybe they figure out some way to make PS4 bc with PS3 without hackers being able to use this same method on PS4. Neverthless this reduces our chances to see bc in PS4. At least we will probably see that long waited PS2 bc....

Maybe they could limit the PS4 to only play PS3 games from the Blu-Ray player. That way, every game you insert into the PS4 will have to go through the Blu-Ray check first, after it determines wether it's a PS3 or PS4 game, the game will run either on the CELL and RSX or whatever the PS4 has. If someone wants to hack the PS4, they'd have to flash the Blu-Ray drive first.... right?

And they can also make every application (except PS3 games... which can only be run from the Blu-Ray drive) be checked by the PS4 security system or whatever... that would make every application that runs on the PS4 need to be signed with the PS4 keys.

That way hackers will need to first flash the Blu-Ray drive, insert a fake game that's actually an app that allows them to gain access to the PS3 part of the PS4 and then start hacking the PS4... right?

Or am I totally wrong? LOL :P

Its the actually ps3 OS that has been hacked not the games. This mean you can do and run anything you want on the ps3 but if the ps4 has a different OS it wont work :/

Yeah i know my spelling sucks but im dysgraphic so live with it :3
