Forums - Gaming - 2011: Year of the Revival of the JRPG Genre On Consoles?

Funny no mention of Final Fantasy Agito XIII, it will probably be better than all the games in the opening post (except The Last Story) as Square-Enix has the best track record on the portable side.

Its a shame Xenoblade isn't being localized, Takahashi is a master, I wish Xenoblade gets localized.

I think the OP's talking about home consoles only.  And it's too early to write off Xenoblade, I mean NOA just renewed their Monado copyright for use.  BTW, look where www.xenoblade.com leads you. ;)

Thats good news about Xenoblade. I thought he was talking about gaming consoles in general.

A letter from Nintendo of America about The Last Story and Xenoblade:

"Hello and thank you for contacting Nintendo,

As you may have heard , Last Story has been announced in Japan. So far, there hasn't been an official announcement of a release in this market.

While I’m unable to offer a specific reason regarding this title, there are many reasons that Nintendo or any other publisher may decide to release a game in one market, but not another. These can include difficulty or cost of localization, the size and financial strength of the publisher, the size of the distribution network, and (most often) the idea that the game will simply not be accepted or enjoyed in another market.

However, there are (like you) real fans of those games or franchises in this market who would love nothing more than to see these games on store shelves here. I understand (and sometimes even share) your frustration! Having said that, please understand that those fans may constitute too small a portion of the gaming public to justify the costs associated with bringing a game here.

Of course, you never know what the future holds, as evidenced by the appearance in this market of previously Japan-only franchises like Advance Wars and Fire Emblem. Keep an eye on our website (http://www.nintendo.com) for all the latest news as it becomes available.

Please note, however, Monado: Beginning of the World (Xenoblade) has been officially announced for release, but hasn't been given a release date yet. When it is, our website's Game Guide (http://www.nintendo.com/games/guide) will be the best place to find it. Once there, use the questions on the left to filter based on system, genre, online play, etc.

When you have narrowed your search, click on the game's title to see all the available information. If what you seek is not yet available, please check back later. When there is new information to share on announced games or other upcoming products, our website is the best official source!

Remember, any posted release dates are estimates and subject to change. As a product's estimated release date approaches, you may wish to check with your local retailers to see when it may be available in your area.

Sincerely,

David Glover
Nintendo of America Inc."

Xenoblade is coming. They are just deciding on a release date for it.

I personally don't think so : 2010 had FFXIII, Resonance of Fate, Star Ocean 4 (PS3), Tales of Graces F, Atelier Rorona, Birth by Sleep, Phantasy Star Portable 2, Golden Sun Dark Dawn and DQIX (though I wasn't interested in this one). 2011 will have Neptune (though I'm already on it), Ninokuni and Tales of Xilia but Versus XIII looks good for 2012... Let's hope editors have some surprises (Jan. 18 maybe?).

Yeah i think 2010 was a better year for JRPG than 2011

Versus has a better likelihood of releasing in the west in 2011 than either Ninokuni or Xillia (both have like zero chance at 2011).  Hell, Xillia has a big question mark releasing at all given Namco's handling of the Tales series overseas (though I think it'll make it). Unless you're talking just Japan, in which case Ar Tonelico 3 and Trinity already came out in 2010.

For likely/possible 2011 western releases, you've got...

PlayStation 3

  • Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel (NISA / Gust) confirmed
  • Disgaea 4 (NISA / N1 Soft) confirmed
  • Final Fantasy XIV: Online (Square Enix) confirmed
  • Final Fantasy Versus XIII (Square Enix) slim chance, likely 2012
  • Hyperdimension Neptunia (NISA / Complie Heart) confirmed
  • Record of Agarest War Zero (Aksys? / Idea Factory) likely, first game beat expectations
  • Rune Factory Oceans (XSEED or Natsume? / Marvelous / Neverland) likely, established series
  • Trinity: Souls of Zill O'll (Tecmo Koei / Omega Force) confirmed
  • White Knight Chronicles II (SCEA / Level-5) likely, hinted by va

Wii

  • Dragon Quest Monsters: Battle Road Victory (Nintendo or Square Enix / 8ing) likely, retail leak
  • Earth Seeker (??? / Enterbrain / Crafts & Meister) semi-likely, attractive pickup
  • Rune Factory Oceans (XSEED or Natsume? / Marvelous / Neverland) likely, established series
  • The Last Story (Nintendo / Mistwalker / AQinteractive) likely, hinted by Gooch, copyrighted
  • Xenoblade (Nintendo / MonolithSoft) semi-confirmed, announced as "Monado", copyright renewals

Xbox 360

  • Monster Hunter Frontier Online (Capcom) slim chance, might not come at all
  • Record of Agarest War Zero (Aksys? / Idea Factory) likely, first game beat expectations

2010 sucked for home console JRPGs.  I'd say 2007 and 2008 are still the years to beat.
