Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft offering free Xbox 360 game with Windows Phone 7

Makes sense.  MS have struggled mightily in the phone OS market, and not in a good way.  Linking the OS to Live and trying to leverage the large 360/Live install base is a sensible play for MS.

Not sure how big an uptake they'll get, but the promotion makes sense for sure.

Why are they relying on the Xbox market to buy a windows phone? Everyone I know is a windows supporter their entire life, but they own iphones. Not much correlation.

All of this, of course, is just my opinion.

Skyrim 100%'d. Dark Souls 100%'d.
Dark Souls > Skyrim.
Halo 4 is the best damn FPS since Halo 3.
Proud pre-orderer of 2 PS4's and an Xbox One.

Currently Playing: Dark Souls II, South Park
Playstation 4: MGS V GZ, Killzone: Shadow Fall, NBA 2k14.

that's a little bit, desperate :S it's way too early for these promotions imo

I really want one of these phones bad. Only time I ever wished I was an AT&T user other than when iphone came out.

How our favorite systems are just like humans and sometimes have issues finding their special someone...

Xbox 360 wants to KinectPS3 wants to Move!  Why are both systems having such relationship problems?  The reason is they both become so infactuated with desire while watching the Wii as it waggles on by. They simply want what they can't have.

Yet thats exactly what you made it out to be by bringing up the PS3 TV deal, you are blantantly obvious with your intentions

Windows 7 phones arent doing so well early on and interest is low in them as well,  throwing this promotion out there so early in its life cycle reeks of being desperate.  Not the same thing as the PS3 TV deal, as it came a few years after release and its a combo deal, buy a PS3 and a Sony TV and get alot of money taken off.  If you were to only buy a Sony TV you dont just get a PS3 free

To call it desperation is incorrect. This is more of a business tactic. They are attempting to claim a stake in a market that is dominated by Apple and Google. What they are trying to do is mass market penetration with these promotions. This does not guarantee success, but it hardy reeks of desperation.

The free game promotion is mainly aimed at Xbox 360 owners; it only targets the audience that already owns an Xbox 360 or a potential owner.  The BOGO sales go on with all retailers with many phones at various times of the year. This promotion may also have something to do with the time of the year it is as well.

I would agree with you if it was later in the products lifetime,  but Windows Mobile 7 has only been out for just over a month,  and early reports are showing the products are a bust.

Those early reports (the links provided earlier) have no data to back it up. It is just conjecture and ancedotal evidence. MS blotched the launch of W7 phones in the US. I mean there weren't any in the stores for the release date; I think it was a week or two later that I started seeing availablitiy on At&t and various mobile websites.

The promotion for the Xbox games are just targeted at basically one audience. If it was really desperation, why would they one audience and not the mass market?

Because they need to try and find a way to gain some traction in the market.  MS has struggled to get anywhere vs Android, Apple, etc. in the market to date.

Now, particularly in the US, they have a big Live community.  It makes sense, in MS posiiton, to try and leverage that community.  Hence the Xbox Live elements of the new Windows phones.  MS is hoping they can use the loyalty of Live customers to get more customers than they otherwise would.

It's pretty textbook approach to take in their position.  How many Live customers decide the mobile link to their accounts, etc. is worth getting a Windows 7 phone I don't know, but it makes sense to try an encourage them.

Personally, thinking about it more I think using a free game isn't the best approach.  There's too much chance a Live customer might already have them all.  I'd suggest a deal where you get a bunch of free MS points to spend would work better.  And perhaps a code that gets you double experience on CoD or something if you get a Windows 7 phone and link it to your Live account.  I think that kind of deal would be more attractive than a game.
