Though MadWorld was praised by critics for taking such a bold step in art direction and game design, consumers were not all that hurried to purchase a copy. Releasing on the Wii might have limited Sega’s target market, and Sega acknowledged that may have well been the case when discussing lackluster sales figures for MadWorld.
Marketing VP Alan Pritchard now says that taking a gamble on the Wii was a mistake, and Sega should have looked to platforms that cater towards gamers who enjoy a spot of the old ultra-violence.
“It was a huge risk that we really believed in at the time, but the title did not sell well," said Pritchard to Game Informer. "Was it on the wrong platform? I don't know. Would it have done better on 360 or PS3? Possibly.”
"Nintendo was supportive of the strategy,” says Pritchard on the fact that Sega had made some gains by releasing The House of the Dead and The Conduit to the Wii. “There was an intent to take the Wii console a little older, and make a more core machine.”
“So games like MadWorld, House of the Dead, and The Conduit fit that strategy. House of the Dead is a more established and casual franchise, and that did very well. Conduit 2 is getting a good buzz."
Unfortunately, MadWorld was ultimately a bad move. At least for Sega, it represents a chance to learn. “I think we will look at some of those slightly more risky type opportunities, but very, very carefully. We've still got high hopes for Conduit 2.”
