Price and Software.

If they don't get those two right, no matter how good the PSP2 is, it will not sell.

A) Why would you buy a system when there aren't any good games on it?

B) Why would you buy an overpriced handheld when the 3DS turns out to be cheaper?

The biggest problem for Sony is the Nintendo 3DS.

Nintendo will realease it sooner than Sony, it will benefit from the HUGE popularity of the DS, the most sold gaming system ever, they will keep all their big exclusives (Mario, Pokemon, Zelda etc....) and will be supported by the third parties editors with their best 3D franchise.

The only room for the PSP was that the DS could not run PS2 type of graphics so it would get these kind of game. But the 3DS change that and it will take all the best licences from third parties.

If it fails, it'll be because it's a PS3-lite, like the PSP is a PS2-lite.

Handhelds need their own identity.

IMO i dont think the PSP2 will fail as the PSP didnt fail (it just wasnt close to its competitor lol).  I doubt the PSP2 should be more expensive than the $299 3DS as its not really adding anything completely new to the handheld world unlike 3D but seems to just buff it up from the original PSP.

A reason i could see it fail tho is because its completely digital.  Mainly because having some kind of cartridge or disc makes it alot easier to use/buy for kids and parents.  Parents hate to buy things they do not understand how to use and a lot of parents these days still do not know how to download the simplest things online.  Unless the parents just buys it, hands it to their 6yr old kid and say "here you go, you figure this out".  Of course some kids are tech smart really young but not all.

WE DONT HAVE A SINGLE BIT OF INFO ON THIS THING YET! WE CANT EVEN BE SURE ITS CALLED THE PSP2!

the next 'PSP' does not even have and specs yet. its all rumour from 'sources'..

all i know is so far the next hand held War i want a 3DS. this could change is SONY have another PSP coming.. as far as i know they havent said anything about it yet

Price and software line up will make or break the PSP2.

I see no reason why it should be priced higher than the 3DS or the product that is making single purpose portable devices obsolete, the iPod Touch/iPhone.

It will have its share of platform exclusives from both SCE studios and 3rd party developers, but what may end up being more relevant to mass consumers is the DD side of software, specifically the lower priced offerings.

I'm just not convinced "Minis" will be able to compete with the more relaxed standards of iOS publishing that has allowed so many titles to be published by small studios for minimal price.

psp sold over 60m with a single analogue stick. thats like ronaldo scoring a free kick with a broken leg.

imagine what it will be like when it isnt handicapped, vunerable and hit by piracy.

in terms of hardware and software, its deinatly not going to be a failure, i cant see anything beating it.

its the price that will determine how popular it gets.

shame you dont have an option "casual nooby games sell more than hardcore games anyway, so it wont be a failure even if it sells fewer units"

where's the "casual gamers can go fuck themselves hardcore only handheld FTW!!" option...........

I'm Sorry, i completely forgot... but the problem is that casuals like gimmicks and save doomed systems.

Depends on how you define "fail" or "dead on arrival." I would define both as the PSP2 selling so bad in comparison to the 3DS and smart phones that Sony will not create a PSP3.

From all the "rumors," a price point of $299 or $349 will leave many US consumers thinking "why for $100 or $50 more I can buy an iPad and have a multiple use device instead of a single use, gaming device?"

Common sense here, the consumer is not stupid and never has been when it comes to luxury goods. Sony with the PSP2 will have to justify it's price point beyond "rivaling PS3 graphics." If it is going to sell it is essentially going to have to have Internet capabilities comparable to the iPad, high definition movie steaming via NetFlix and Hulu, and a high pixel in-built camera.

If the PSP2 is released mainly as a gaming device at a price range over $250, I believe it will be the last hand-held Sony will create because of a lack of sales due to competition with Apple's iPad, the Google Android, the Microsoft Windows 7 pad computer, and the Nintendo 3DS.

People forget that when the 3DS and PSP were released in 2004-2005 the hand-held market was completely different. The iPhone was not even out yet and gaming on cell phones was in it's infancy. Fast forward to 2011 and 2012. Sony and Nintendo are facing a market where the competition is much more varied and not a red ocean between Sony and Nintendo.

Maybe putting an apple in the back would justify the price?

From some inputs, maybe i should create a thread of what PSP2 should be/have to sucess.
