Sure, it's possible to prefer Potter to LotR.

However, it is not possible for a rational human being to actually think Potter is BETTER than LotR. By any standard of art, writing, performance, direction (talking about both the novels and films), Tolkien/Jackson's work is just flat-out superior in every regard.


I like LotR but seriously the writing in the books is so boring compared to Harry Potter. I only read the third one and watched the movies btw (which are awesome). LotR translates to the big screen better than the books represent the series...the opposite for HP though. So if we're basing things off like that, HP is better than LotR IMO.

And people wonder why modern literature is dead. If a book doesn't hook someone in five pages, it must be terrible, overwrought, and boring. The scope of Tolkien's work is breath-taking and if you can't sit down long enough to actually appreciate that majesty, well, it's just a loss for you.

Uh...I read the entire third book. Writing is still bad compared to HP.

In that case, almost anything written before the 20th century must be crap in your eyes. I'd hate to hear what you have to say about Dickens. Obviously JK Rowling must be better than that hack.

People have different tastes. I do agree with you, but you have to bear in mind that you read books in different paces. Somebody might be bored if the story starts slow and leavea a bad first impression.

I having trouble reading Joyce's Ulysses, a reason might be that I'm as a non native speaker have problems with old english. On the other hand I may have spent just a couple of days with the Millenium trilogy. Even though I enjoyed the latter, I don't dare to say it's better than Joyce's masterpiece.

I'm really not a fan of Star Wars and less so of Harry Potter, but I can't believe Potter is winning.  I suppose as we all age the world continues to change.  That being said, while Harry Potter seems like a cash-in can anyone really deny that Star Wars wasn't and isn't any less so.  Star Wars invented merchandising.

Also, I haven't read the whole thread, but comparing Harry Potter to LOTR (although probably a more apt comparison) is a very hard comparison to make.  LOTR was an initial publishing flop, but it became a very important work in our history.  Embraced by the hippie movement and influencing rock bands including Led Zeppelin, not to mention it's influence with video game design, it is a far more important work than Harry Potter can ever aspire to become.  However, what's better is not always the most important and while I'd like to champion LOTR, I honestly couldn't make it through the series.

So... to each their own.

i dont especially like any of the movies from either of these franchises. but as far as the franchise universe goes i think harry potter is more interesting, i dislike star wars it is a crude combination of cliched sci fi elements and samuri with light sabers. i think the jedi are freakin stupid. I also really hate george lucas as a film maker. so yeah harry potter wins for me. dont cut my throat out people its just an opinion not an insult against your beliefs.

Is this serious?

The Harry Potter movies are incredibly shitty compared to the awesome books. Star Wars anhilate easily every movie of Harry Potter. I can't believe how average the Harry Potter movie looks like compared to the books when all the Star Wars movies are great.

 

If we are comparing Harry Potter books to SW movies then it's close, both are among my favorite series in two different genres!
