I wasn't going to post, but I suppose I will add my thoughts.
First, Harry Potter:
I started reading the books in elementary school. I didn't want to, but my mom bought the first one for me and told me to read it. Well, I love reading, so I figured I might as well. I loved it. I reread it many times. Still do, actually. From then on though, I was hooked.
I couldn't wait for the next one, and it got worse and worse after the fifth one. I'd spend days doing nothing but reading about what people thought would happen, and all the known details and everything I could. When the seventh one finally came out, I had to read it three times before I'd put it down. A bit more than necessary, yes, but I couldn't help myself. Heck, I even love the fifth book, and a lot of people I know hate it.
As for the movies... I was very excited to see them. They weren't quite as good as the books, but I loved the first two, and really liked the third one (the lack of Quidditch made it inferior, however good the rest was). The fourth... well, it wasn't too bad, but I was very disappointed by the huge build up to the Quidditch World Cup when they cut away to the celebration after.
The new ones haven't been bad, but I've been disappointed by each one of them. They seem to jump around a lot, and if I hadn't read the books, they'd confuse the heck out of me. I've enjoyed them, but they aren't incredible, in my opinion.
Now, Star Wars:
Unfortunately, I was of negative age when the first three movies were in theaters. So I only got to see the prequels actually in theaters. However, I was first exposed to Star Wars at about the same age as Harry Potter (perhaps even younger). I didn't really understand what was going on in them, but I was fascinated. I really got into them. Of course, at that age, the special effects didn't look bad to me at all. I thought it was pretty much the coolest thing ever. Lightsabers. I pretended to be a jedi as a kid, along with some of my friends. (Fortunately, I grew out of it, unlike one of them who still thinks he can use the Force...) The originals to this day are among my favorite movies ever, if not of all time.
As for the prequels... The first came out when I was 8. I'd seen the originals beforehand, but I didn't fully understand them. I didn't like the whole midichlorian thing back then though. I remember that very clearly. Anyway, I enjoyed them all. I thought they were good movies, and fun to watch. Ignoring certain actors/writing goes a long way to improving the quality though. I never liked them as much as the originals because of all the moments where I wanted to hit my head on the chair. (Noooo? Way to make Darth Vader look like a pussy.) I missed the jump to lightspeed too. I always thought that was cool. The prequels didn't have the same feel as the originals, and that's why I enjoyed them less.
So... That's quite a lot of text. My point with all of that was just because I'm curious if anyone can guess what I voted for. And I like talking about both series. Comparing the Harry Potter books and the original Star Wars movies... I love both, but I have to choose Star Wars. As for the prequels versus the HP movies... I'm not sure. I enjoyed all of them. I think I'd still chose the prequels though. My vote was for Star Wars.
Just for fun... Lord of the Rings. I tried reading the books at first, but I couldn't do it. Then I watched the movies. Oh my gosh. I love the movies. They are incredible. And after that, I was able to get through the books and enjoy them.
