Actually I think Duke already did an experment that connect a computer the an ape's brain to read it's brain waves when the ape move a joystick to move an mechical arm (which got him food). Surprisingly after a while the ape dropped the joystick as it realize it didn't need to actually move it's hand anymore. About two days the ape could move the mechinal arm as if it was it's own ... just by thinking.
So it's really is not that far away as we found out that with time the brain can figure out a computer program to control stuff like a mechical arms. Instead of the computer figuring out the brain the brain figured out the computer input instead. Of course the idea of having wires in contact of the surface of the brain isn't very appealing when it comes to people.
