Forums - General - Privatise all national water supplies to pay off debts?

If a company made profit off of water supplies then the majority of the population would be poor.  Cleaning water is expensive and the only reason it's cheap is the government subsidizes water, like corn.  No company would want to control the water supply anyway because there would be no way they could sell it for cheap and make a profit.  One of the groups in my senior design class for Chemical Engineering did their project on a new water filtration system in Arizona.  If they sold the water in their plant for profit, the price would have more than quadrupled the national average.  That would cripple everyone's finances from big business to me and you.  All good would go up in price, I mean all.  Food, toys, cleaning supplies, you name it, the prices would go up drastically.

In shorter words, it's idiotic and a little bit of thinking would make you realize how dumb the idea is.

Around the Network

The government loses money in the long run when they privatize public goods like water.  It would be a bad move for anyone to sell a business that was gauranteed to always make money.

I see your point though, we've been saying FU to our future generations, so whats another punch in the gut?

I have read through the arguments for and against water privatisation. Both government and private enterprise can deliver water to households consumers it would be cheaper for governments to deliver water to households and still make a profit but private enterprises could charge as much as the want and water prices would become a lot more expensive.

The quality and supply of water could be monitored and controlled by government and upgrades would ensure the quality and supply of water. The quality and supply of water would be questionable if questionable private companies ran the water supplies and upgrades would be avoided as a way of saving costs.

That supports the government running it then, right? Are you just stating the opposite position?

Do you agree/disagree with those statements?
