"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

You should try opening it and replacing the thermal paste, you have absolutely nothing to worry about, replace the thermal paste with something like IC diamong or arctic silver, there are online guides, with images on how to do it.

Quoted for truth. I can't tell you how many YLOD PS3s I've bought for 20 bucks, just to replace the thermal paste (even sometimes with the cheap Dynex stuff from Best Buy) and turn around and sell them for $150.

My backup PS3 in my bedroom has probably logged 500 hours of late night movies/games in the last 6 months, and it was a brick before. It had gotten YLOD, and then someone stuffed it in a pillow case with a blow-dryer which melted half the case but revived the PS3. A week later it YLOD again and they GAVE it to me. Now its quiet and smooth. Rubbing alcohol and thermal paste did the trick.

Is your external HDD formatted for Fat32? If its not, plug it into your PC and format it, otherwise the PS3 won't recognize it.

You said its an external HDD, so it obviously has a USB plug on it. Something tells me your PC has a few of those too.

If you don't know what Fat32 is, it'll be extremely hard to explain it to you. Its basically the format that your HDD uses for storing files, etc. All HDD use these types of formats. Fat32 is the oldschool format that was used on pretty much ever HDD before 2000. It only allows for a maximum single file size of 4Gb, which Sony made the requirement for externals to prevent piracy of games. So no individual file under Fat32 can be more than 4Gb. You can have 1000 different 4Gb files, but nothing more.

Plug the external into your PC, backup any files you've already gotten saved on it to your PC, and then open up disk management and format your external to Fat32. If you're on a newer PC you'll have to download a tool to do it since they no longer have the option for format under Fat32. Then copy everything you have back over onto your external drive and plug it back into your PS3.

My PS3 died this week too! I had to reformat everything to get it working. Hold the power button untill it beeps twice and see if you can go into safe mode. Try 1,3,then 4. If none work format it and maybe it'll work.

This might work thats what I did to get mine working again. Good luck and I hope you backed up your saved files. I didn't and I will never buy downloadable content again thats not on my pc.

How does losing save files have anything to do with DLC?

to do what clown is saying it requires you to wipe your entire hard drives memory, so you lose everything. All the tv shows, everything was lost. Still your PS3 works again.
