SMB2 (the Western version) is kind of the retarded, red-headed stepchild of the SMB franchise.
That being said, it was and remains my favorite of the SMB series, so it's good to see I'm not the only one who actually enjoys this game.
As many are aware, the game was originally a localized port of a Japanese game titled Doki Doki Panic that had no absolutely no relation to Mario Bros. They basically redesigned the game, replaced characters with Mario Bros. sprites and wrote a Mario Bros. story to match. This is why it feels the most removed from SMB games.
It may well be the least loved SMB game for this reason and probably not the best candidate for a remake.
(The "real" SMB2 was essentially a harder version of SMB1, using more or less the same graphical resources and was only released in Japan. They should sell this as a VC game if they don't already. It was deemed too similar to SMB1 and too difficult for a Western port when the game originally came out, hence the American SMB2.)
