Baby seized after mother eats poppy seed bagel
By QMI Agency

A lawsuit was filed Thursday in Pennsylvania after a mother's newborn was taken from her by child services after she ate a poppy seed bagel, skewing the results of a drug test.

NBC News reports that Elizabeth Mort's blood work at a hospital tested positive for opiates because she ate a poppy seed bagel before having the baby. Three days after giving birth, Children and Youth Services came to Mort's home to take the baby away. Little Isabella was returned to her mother five days after, when it was shown that Mort did not take any illegal drugs.

"It felt like our heart was ripped in pieces," she told NBC. "The most important person was missing, and we didn't know when we would see her again."

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on behalf of the parents against CYS and Jameson Hospital where the blood tests were analyzed.

im pretty sure its a rather large quantities of poppy seeds actually required to do that.  the bagel would need have been mostly poppy seeds.

How did they know that's what happened. Mistakes happen plan and simple. That's what I hate about these bogus lawsuits, the give legtimate lawsuits a bad name. lol

Not necessarily, it all depends on the level of the drug that they're testing for ...

If you're testing based on the assumption that someone used a drug recently (within 48 hours) the level of the drug in the blood would require a lot of poppy seeds to be eaten; if you're testing for a level where people had used drugs in the past few weeks a single bagel might produce a false positive; and if you're simply looking for the presence of a chemical tracer a very small quantity of poppy seeds (shared a bagel with friend) might lead to a false positive.

my mother failed a drug test due to a poppy seed muffin 10 years(ish) back.  i'm not sure what level they look for but having the muffin the morning of failed the test but she was able to pass it 5 days later.

Wait. Jameson Hospital in Pennsylvania?

Might very well be my hometown <_>

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Just like in Seinfeld (minus the kid).

That's pretty sweet actually! I'd give up my newborn baby for 5 days if I get a lawsuit out of it!
