It could be that Sony Don't actually know how many have sold to consumers? What with there not being tracking services in the 120 countries(or whatever it is) that they sell to. I doubt it has anything to do with them "getting their arse kicked". Also, sold to retail is more important to them than sold to consumers(would investors care more if they sold 1.5M units to retail, or that 1M units were sold by someone else to consumers?).
