Set it not to run at start up.
Today's concurrent user peak was 2,987,994, helped by 51,000 on the new Fallout. Three million surely can't be far off.

The number of concurrent users will keep increasing until the winter holidays are over. Steam's yearly peak is always in the winter holiday.
Last year, Steam's concurrent users was hovering around 1.7-1.9 millions before winter holidays, and it jumped all the way to almost 2.5 millions during it. So I can see Steam peak 3.5 millions by the end of the year, probably more.
3,113,677 concurrent users at the moment. Presumably, the release of FM 2011 is the cause of that. With Black Ops (another Steamworks title) being released next week, I wouldn't be surprised if it peaks much higher than that next weekend.

Yup. I'm actually surprised that FM2011 helped increase the concurrent users number so soon.
Steam keeps increasing so fast, and 2011 there will be TONS of games with steamworks.
To be fair, the Championship/ Football Manager games have always been big sellers, and generally top the UK Charttrack PC retail chart for months. A prime example of a pretty niche game that hasn't been 'streamlined' and hobbled in an attempt to chase the console dollar and still sells a shedload precisely because of that- other devs would be wise to take note.

Not surprising.
Their competitors, sans GoG aren't doing a whole lot to court users to their services. Smart business model, and making a killing from what they do. With some titles doing the whole Steamworks thing, you wonder how Steam is splitting the profits. If its a 70-30 split on a $49.99 or $59.99 game....They are doing very, VERY well for themselves.
By the end of the year, Valve will of had 4 major releases on their system that should of yielded huge profits - Battlefield Bad Company 2, Civilization V, Fallout: New Vegas, and Call of Duty: Black Ops. Given how the first 3 have sold, and how Modern Warfare 2 sold on Steam.....Gabe has to be a happy and rich man.
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
