Forums - General - Should the UN send help to Somalia?

Somalia has been in a constant state of civil war since the 90's. But a few years ago Muslim extremist groups banded together to over throw the democratic government. At first the Government was able to hold its own but very quickly the country deteriorated even further into chaose then ever before. The Government then begged Ethiopia to come to its rescue and Ethiopia sent over a hundred thousand troops into Somalia.

Over the course of a few years Ethiopia was able to restore Government control in most of the capital Mogadishu. However the toll was getting to hard for Ethiopia to bear loosing thousands of men Ethiopia decided to consider themselves victorious and pull out. Almost as soon as Ethiopia left the Government returned to collapse the insurgents took Baidoa the home of the Somali parliament.

Intense fighting continued untill today when the Somali Government only controls the airport and a few blocks of the capital Mogadishu. Now as Ethiopia pulled out the African Union sent in a peace keeping force of 8,000 troops these troops were to keep the peace in Mogadishu. However quickly the country fell apart and the government heads ran for cover in Mogadishu.

Off the coast of Somalia is the biggest pirate infestation in the world. These pirates take shelter in Somalia and capture passing ships. Alongside the pirates Al-Qaida trains terrorists in Somalia and dispatches them around the world. Somalia has destabalized into a failed state.

So the AU finally begged the UN to deploy a peace keeping force or peace making force. With dozens to hundreds of people dying daily in fighting and the pirates and Al-Qaida taking over the country side you'd think that the UN would dispatch peace keepers. But no the UN couldn't agree to send help so they abandoned the AU.

Now we all know that the UN tried to stabalize Somalia in the past and failed. But with Somalia becoming a growing threat to democracy and to the world, shouldn't the UN deploy a peace keeping force? And if not Somalia shouldn't America or Nato deploy some kind of force to stop the blood shed and restore peace and order?

What will it take a massive suicide bombing, to finally get the UN or America to realize Somalia needs help?

no.  failed states dont deserve to exist.  someone should take the land and impose order.   whats the point of keeping somalia as the country of somalia rather than the territory/state/province of somalia.

Yah and right now that someone is Al-Qaida and Al-Shabab. Wouldn't it be in the worlds best interest for the United Nations to take the land and impose order?

Right now AU troops are being massacred and the African Union is a part of the United Nations. African countries have been begging the UN to get involved and send peace makers (Keepers) to Somalia. It is a failed state and if we don't help them the Islamist Terrorist groups will impose order.

Then a few years from now terrorists from Somalia will fly planes into trade centers and blow up subways. The UN should not turn its back on any country failed or not. Its the UN responsability to step in as acts of genocide occur and the country of somalia falls apart.

Don't forget that if Somalia falls apart bordering countries like Ethiopia and Kenya could very well fall next. Then like a virus it could spread across the continent.

Its our (The countries of the world) responsability to help Somalia and the continent of Africa!

Several reasons.

1) Nobody wants to actually try and rule over Somalia, it'd be messy and expensive.

2) The Somalian people don't want to be ruled over by another country, which makes it immoral to rule them and also makes it even more messy and expensive.

Also Somalia is a bit screwed and it isn't an easy problem to solve. First step would probably be to recognise Somaliland and Puntland because those territories actually work - unlike the transitional government.

Send them help to do what exactly?

Somalia is pretty well fucked beyond any and all help at this point.  Short of a COMPLETE ground up rebuilding of their country area by area involving massive economic and infrastructure building.

This would be a giant costly and taxing effort even if the world hadn't faced a giant collapse.

Yes UN Absolutely should help the Somalia People. Because Somalia is Poor and illeterate

Country. UN play good role for development if UN want.

Being Somali and actually went to the county at 2005 (Which was a pretty great experience, but I wouldn't dare to go now) I think at the moment they really need to stop the petty civil wars, install a stable government which the Islamic Courts were pretty well at 2004-2006 that was until Ethopia (backed by the US started to connect their actions with "extreme Islam"). Just build the place piece by piece hopefully something can out of it.

I think the best UN can do is send aid and encourage neighbouring nations to help them.

I still believe it can be a prosperous nation even though seeing that within my life-time isn't going to happen.

I don't think it is possible to "fix" Somalia ... This isn't because Somalia is "So far gone" that it could not be fixed, it is because the timeline and cost to create a workable government in Somalia is far beyond what any country would be willing to put forward.

Effectively, what would need to happen is you would have to take control of the country and impose law and order for 10 to 20 years; after that you could start introducing a (democratic) government over the next 10 to 20 years; and after the government is in place you would have to continue to support it for 10 to 20 years. Only after the people who were raised, educated and came of age in the secure country you provided fully took control of the government would you be able to successfully leave the country.

Well yeah.  It's not like somalia is fucked for all of eternity or anything.

It's just, there isn't anything the international community can really do.  Even aid often proved to hurt development ratehr then help it as countries tend to learn to depend on the aid and don't focus enough effort on forming internal means of self sufficency.

There ain't nothing that can be done, and won't be for a while... unless the UN wants to basically try what the US is doing with Afghanistan and Iraq.  Except even more costly in manpower and money.
