Good try, but you're not looking for a solution. You're re-writing the equation so that it measures in kilometres.

What the question is, is simply presenting you with a basic transformation. The complicated equation is only a distraction. When you have a transformation of form f(x) -> f(1/b *x) you have a dilation or a change of scale - widen or shorten horizontally.

Try a more simple example on your calculator to illustrate the point:  Y1 = x^2    and    Y2= (x/1.6)^2  See when b>1 it widens.

See how that same transformation works on a simple function? The same behaviour will occur with the transformation on your question. You should probably have some notes on transformations - check them over too!

I'm unsure if your teacher wants anything done with the 10 < x < 100 part.

OK here comes my dilemma - the calculator I have doesn't do graphs. I looked over and I have problems in my HW that require graphing...well I'm gonna have to get those from someone else.

Anyway I'd prefer if you just gave me the answer so I can look over that and try to make sense of it.

Well I gave you the descriptive part of the answer - describing the transformation.

The actual equation part is simple - simply substitute both x variables with (x/1.6) and then muliply it out.

H(x) = 0.002(x/1.6)^2 0.005(x/1.6) - 0.029

        = 0.00125x^12.503125x - 0.029

As for not having a calculator, though they may be tedious, there are several online alternatives easily found on google.

Edit: Anyhow, good luck on your quiz tomorrow! I'm off to sleep.

Ah, I remember the days when I could do problems like this in just a few minutes.  Taking general education courses in college has stupidified me.

Good luck on your quiz, Soriku!

This is going to be difficult with a non-functioning plus sign on VGC...

I had my quiz yesterday. Didn't do so well. I'm hoping I did good on our section 1.1 retest though. I hope I get at least a C in this class...lol :/ I'm doing well in my other classes at least.

What's this general education in college stuff?

Basically your average math/science classes with the plebian masses.

Taking courses like General Biology and Survey of Mathematical Theory have made me complacent, not to mention I've forgotten a decent chunk of what I learned in high school.

That's what I get for going liberal arts instead of science or engineering.

lol I don't know what that stuff you're talking about is (except maybe Biology...I didn't do so well in Honors Biology in 9th grade and now I'm just taking academic Physics. Most of my class is seniors though. I don't know how but I have the highest grade in my class in Physics and I sleep lolz). Is it much harder than high school math? I'm not going to remember anything I learn in high school math anyway...

No, it's far far easier.  It teaches you the very basic theories behind Alegbra and Calculus.  Things like simple pattern recognition.  Classes like this can be stupidly easy, and it's basically resulted in me bairly using my brain in school for the past several years outside of my music theory classes.

As they say, use it or lose it, and I've lost quite a bit.  =/

Let me tell you, Honors Pre-Cal isn't fun. Here's a problem I had to do for homework:

Solve for a in terms of x. a-b = x, a =/= x, and a ^3 - b^3 = 19x^2.

It wasn't fun to do.

Sophomore year is really harder than freshman year. I'm taking two more honors courses this year, and 4 of the courses I'm taking are difficult.
