Forums - General - So Netflix has come to Canada

I've been waiting for this service to come here a long time, so I signed up right away.

For fellow Canadians interested in the terms, the first month is free, and thereafter $7.99 per month gets you unlimited viewing. There's no DVD service in Canada, but who cares about DVDs anymore? The available content is a little limited right now (licensing is the trickiest part of any digital content service, and just because Netflix has a license to serve content in the US doesn't mean they have a license to serve it in Canada), but I still find there's enough stuff I'm interested in watching to last me the rest of this year. I'm sure by then, they'll have a lot of new content available.

Service was a little spotty, probably due to a surge of launch-day demand. I found the stream to be frustratingly unreliable in the middle of the evening, but flawless around 11:00. The video on my iPad was near DVD quality. Not quite as good as SD videos bought from iTunes, but better than the SD video that you get with digital cable in my area.

Sadly, it doesn't seem to work on my phone over Rogers' 3G network. I'm not sure if that's because Rogers is filtering out the service or if the bandwidth isn't up to snuff. I suspect the former.

It's a great service, and I strongly suggest checking it out if you like watching TV shows or movies at all.

And Netflix streaming is already functional with both Wii and PS3 in Canada.

I'm asssuming when you say who cares about DVD's you are lumping Blu-ray discs in with them too. Based on US streaming video liscencing, I'd say anyone who actually likes movies/shows but doens't want to go to the theater. Most movies hit DVD/Blu-Ray way before they get onto a streaming source. Not only that, but there are a ton of great older TV shows that aren't streaming (like Get Smart, which I'm waiting for Season 2 disc 5 for the last month).

To top it off, their HD streaming is more like DVD streaming. Blu-ray offers me 1080p video along with crystal clear 5.1 surround sound. No one can touch that yet with streaming but Netflix theoretically could thanks to SRS adding support to silverlight for 5.1 surround.

Great that you have the service though. I love it myself and stream about 8 shows/movies a month along with renting 8 discs a month.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Yeah, but I understand you need to request a Netflix Wii disc to use it. It's free to subscribers.

I finally managed to get Netflix working on my phone. Looks good and the stream was steady, but pushing a steady stream of data over 3G is a great way to kill your battery, so unless you have a power source nearby, there are probably better ways to entertain yourself with your smartphone.

Did a firmware update and got it going on the PS3, too, and they seem to have worked out the launch jitters already. Smooth streaming and looking great.

So get on board, canuckleheads! The more of us sign up, the faster that list of content will grow.

Now that Netflix has come to Canada, Canada owes us.  I say give us Alanis Morissette and reruns of the TV show "You Can't Do That On Television" and we'll call it even.

-As an owner of all three systems and since I've experienced Netflix on all three, here's my rankings:

1.  360:  But only because its disc free.  For some reason, it loads my movies the slowest of the three.

2.  Wii:  Awesome interface and blazing fast speed.  Most movies/shows look about as good on the Wii as they do on the HD systems.

3.  PS3:  Interface is a little clunky but just as fast as the Wii.

That's my opinion.  Your experience and what matters to you may differ (thus making your opinion wrong).  Netflix is awesome on all three, though.  At only $9 a month for so much content, I recommend it to anybody except blind people.

Cool.  I've got netflix myself in the US and I love it.

There aren't any weird canadian laws that might effect what you get is there?

I seem to recall there being a strange Canadian law about so many television shows on a station needing to be local, though i could be wrong.

I recently went back and watched Babylon 5 again on the US Streaming.

It's disc free on ps3 in Canada, btw, and it should be going disc free in NA in October.

When that happens, I expect the PS3 version to leapfrog to the top.  I like using the PS3's version because I can set the system to fall asleep after 2 hours--meaning I can go to sleep while watching TV/Movies.  One of my favorite things to do.  The problem arises because for some reason, I keep going back to the XMB when I want to watch another episode of a show or something.  Choosing categories is a lot less intuitive on the "Tre", too.  But like I said, they're all good.
