Not quite true, sitting was just as possible back then as it is now.
It's like this: As a game developer, you have and have always had two choices:
Process the raw data that comes from the Kinect hardware yourself, or simply use the Kinect software library that Microsoft has already spent ten thousands of development hours on.
If you use Microsoft's Kinect library, pretty much all the processing is done for you - you get a finished skeleton map of the players in front of the TV, how much calories they're burning and so on. And if Microsoft improves the Kinect software library, your game will automatically benefit too.
Almost all games use this option, but it comes with disadvantages too: The players have to stand, only two players and a limited number of control points are possible and the lag is high.
"Your Shape" is the only game I know of that uses the option of processing the raw data on its own. Using that option people can sit, more than two players are possible etc. - but it's all up to you as the developer to implement that. Just like "Your shape", these games most definitely won't use a skeleton map, and if the Kinect software library improves your game will not benefit. It's the option very few games will choose.
