| Bitmap Frogs said: Every since I think it was late 2008/early 2009 the mod staff was shuffled moderation has gone to crap, specially concerning 360 trolling. In the old days mods would read the forum and check post history which resulted in waaay better moderation. These days they just manage the report queue so without background information on the poster everything is considered "just opinion". So trolling is a free for all game again, specially on the X360 subforum. Try something like this talking about the Wii or the PS3 and you'll be toast. Heck, I took TWO bans for stating a truth. For the record, one was a truth which shed a bad light on PS3 posters, the other shed a bad light on X360 posters. That's why I suggest anyone who's serious about a gaming forum to just join GAF. Moderators there are quirky but they can spot a troll miles away. To give you an idea, Crazzyman lasted months if not years here. On GAF, didn't last a week. |
*grumbles* You do know that whining like this on the forum is usually frowned upon, right? If you have a problem with a moderator, or the way that the mod team is acting in general, then talk to the admin in charge of moderators! Everyone on this forum is (I hope) human, and thus, prone to mistakes.
As someone who was brought on well after this period, but has experience moderating other forums for longer than you've been a member here, I can tell you what I think: I think that yes, a user's post history is important. However, it is unreasonable to expect a mod to look up all of a user's posts to determine their entire history. Looking at prior moderator actions toward the user is actually a good way of doing it. What it tells me when I look at someone's history is what they've had a penchant for doing that was not liked, AND that they've been told not to do it before. If someone has a history of trolling a company, and someone else alerts on it, I'll look at the mod history and see that yes, they have a problem with this, and be more likely to take a harsher action.
Regarding your bans, I've looked them up, and I can see why all 3 were issued. Your first ban I can make an argument for either way, but I can see why it would be ban-worthy. I probably wouldn't have done a ban, but it all comes down to the variance in people. Your second ban I can, in theory, make an argument against, but I agree with, and also would, ban for that post myself. While hype is known to be used for some, your post insinuated that everything on the PS3 is hyped, and that nothing there lived up to said hype. But overhyped things exist on every system; it's not unique to Sony. And your 3rd ban, well.. yeah. Any moderator should've banned for that. I don't remember the exact wording, but saying that everyone in thread has their panties in a tizzy is a clear flame to users.
If you really have a problem with a forum, the best thing I can tell you to do is to speak up the ladder. I can't speak for the crazzy incident, since I wasn't a mod at that time, but there are a few people that I will admit that I think it took too long to get rid of. Nonetheless, they're gone now. What I can say is that the ban process has been streamlined so that you don't get 14 strikes before being perma-banned; this was part of how crazzy lasted so long. I'd say that it's something we as a mod team, both old and new, have already learned from. And, as you can see with this last batch that included myself moving up, there's still some shaking going on. You know what, too? It's a good thing. Otherwise, people get complacent and a few of the trolls know what they can get away with. I can tell you that I've been taking actions against a few people who've been getting away with stuff. But I'm not going to turn things into a witch hunt. The best way to get me to look at a post, yes, is to report it. If the report is still there when I get on the site, I'll act on it if I deem it needbe. However, as you cite with the 360, we do have fewer fans of that system here; that's been the case as long as I can remember. And with fewer fans of it, fewer people alert on the trolling, thus, we see less of it.
At least for me, I take pride in trying to be a fair mod. It's not a secret that everyone has preferences; mine are actually fairly easy to see. But despite my not being a fan of the PS3, I still would have taken action on your post regarding the hyping. My job as a moderator is not to mod what I don't like, it's to enforce the rules. And a baseless attack on a system is a rule violation, even if it's not to my favorite system...
Anyway, this is enough sidebarring. Let's get back on topic, please.
