Put three to sleep, attack the last one. Try to kill it. Make sure that at least three are always asleep, so you have to leave the battl and go around putting them to sleep a lot, but it's very doable if you do that.

If you're still interested, I mean

Status ailments have a rather low success rate in LO.

I just do it the same way I do every other boss battle, buff everyone, then attack/heal.

I don't remember it being particularly annoying.

They really don't, especially not in that battle. Those things are extremely susceptible to sleep.

I hardly ever use status magic, but whenever I want to try it out, it always misses.

And status magic never misses the party.

I tell you thiss a lot in a lot of games, but:

I'm not terrible at LO.

But I see almost no reason to use status magic. IMO, it's a waste of MP on something that could miss.

Maybe I've just gotten into the habit of not using status magic on enemies. I mean, it's pointless to try them on bosses, and equally pointless in random encounters.

That was where I got stuck as well, the problem was that I couldn't ever get more than one to stay asleep at a time.  I'd try to put one down, then run away so I could put another one to sleep but the first one would wake up immediately.  Any idea what I was doing wrong?

I really enjoyed the game up until that point, but the frustration from repeatedly failing that part became too great...
