Forums - General - Australian election update - Labor wins the election

What matters for me would be getting some of those parlimentary reforms passed. As I said earlier if nothing else is achieved and they collapse after that happens I couldn't care less. This parliament may well be a great opportunity and it should be utilised.

Its irrelivant that the liberal/nationals have one seat more, since the people didn't give either party enough votes to win the seats required. What does matter is that labor has the seats at this point in time. Sure it could all collapse, but to say that the liberal/nationals (which is a coalition in itself remember) won the election is just flat out wrong since they didn't get the 76 seats and Tony Abbott isn't going to be the PM (at least for now).

My problem with international politics is that it requires too much information... because the names are deceptive.

A Liberal/ National coalition sounds like it'd be a far left and far right wing coalition.

The liberals are actually a right wing conservative party, go figure I know...

Well I guess there's social liberalism and individual liberties...

"Right wingers are libertarians. They believe in liberty for the individual as the most important fundamental principle society should be based on."

They certainly aren't libertarians.

Well I guess that depends on your perspective.  Is it liberal to impose a mandatory internet filter? Is it liberal to all those involved in the mining industry to tax them at 40%?  I think the old school philosophies are lost in modern politics anyway when the parties themselves have policies which go either way.

Did I mention the Labor party? I don't vote for them either. A libertarian party wouldn't oppose same sex marriage for example. You could hardly call the Liberals libertarian.

No, you didn't.  I was just citing examples of why the label 'liberal' is subjective, should you wish to align it to the left only.  The same sex marriage was denied by both major parties.  If that is to be the measure of libertarianism then I guess we don't have a major liberal party in Australia.

The big question though is does this election increase the likelihood of Australia joining the rest of the world with a "mature" content rating for video games (the R18 proposal)?

Odd.

Maybe they want things to liberally change the conservative way... or something.

I would agree that we certainly don't have any party that is liberal enough for my tastes, at least out of the two major parties that is.
