If not for Kinect, I would agree with you. But I think they are going to need to recoup some of Kinect's dev costs. So in the end, Kinect could cost them some 360 sales.

Well said...
which is exactly why I cancelled all my plans to get the new slim and Kinect. When Microsoft announced they were going to raise the live prices, I knew then I made the right decision.
I can't justify spending my money with those prices.

As for their pricing, new stuff is always priced high. It is a little business law called supply and demand. Sony was only mocked earlier in the generation because they very few gamers can afford to pay $600 for a console, and in the first year the only real highlight franchise was Resistance and Motorstorm. Microsoft is confident but between Sony and Microsoft, Microsoft is the only one that is focusing on delivering hard core games since March. Sony fans are in quite the exclusive/timed exclusive losing streak. It started in March after the release of God of War III and will end when Socom 4 and Killzone 3 ships in February-ish (At least Microsoft got third parties to release Mass Effect 2 and Metro 2033 in that time frame). Since the release of God of War III Microsoft has won the exclusive/timed exclusives with Splinter Cell Conviction, Alan Wake, and Crackdown 2. For the holiday's Microsoft will put Halo Reach and Fable III up against LBP2 and GT5. The sales war for this holiday is already lost for Sony. Of course Microsoft is confident. |
I thought most people believed this generation would result in:
PS3>>>>>>360>>>>Wii

The Kinect launch event reveals a massive disrespect for enthusiast gamers that overshadows the actual tech on display. http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/News/230934,microsofts-kinect-launch-laughs-at-sweaty-gamers.aspx I'm surprised that a thread hasn't been started about it, but apparently Microsoft hates it's current audience and is willing to make fun of them so that they can make celebrities feel better about themselves.
"I think we know that hard-core gamers will be the first to go out and buy it, as they are with any product." http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-20009071-17.html "I have one thing to say to the hardcore gamer who says Kinect has nothing for them," said Toulouse while discussing concerns about Kinect on Major Nelson's latest podcast. "Those games will have achievements, so don't tell me you're not going to play at least some of them, you hardcore gamers out there. I know you will." http://www.gamerzines.com/xbox-360/news/hardcore-gamers-wrong-10-years.html Microsoft have been making some very arrogant and defensive statements since the Kinect announcement. I think the point of this thread is to point how Sony have learnt their launch lesson's, but Microsoft is resorting to the old Sony. |
unbelievable. The one about the achievements was especially cheap.

Who would respect hardcore gamers anyway? If you're talking about the people who post on the forums in general then you would certainly not give them any respect because they deserve none.

And Vgchartz is one of the best wider read forums out there for signal / noise.
Not meaning offense to the posters of the last 3 posts but if you look at how the so called hardcore gamers are a bunch of whiny nerds, why would you respect them? I certainly don't.

This thread is ridiculous, there is no way in hell Microsoft its 1/10th as cocky or "arrogant" as Sony was at the beginning of this gen. And anyone who agrees that they are, is just trying to fool themselves into believing the impossible.
There are just so many insaneo world quotes that came from Sony at the beginning of this gen that blows away everything MS has done since.
While I do believe Microsoft have been making a few foolish moves they are no where near as bad as the ones Sony is known for. At one point in time I absolutely hated Sony as a company just for the shit they were spewing. Now that the real world has caught up with them and they have become a little more humble, I sort of feel for them. But I will never respect them like I did before this gen began. And it would take an insane amount of shit for MS to come close to what came before.
Raising the cost of Live is BS, I agree but there is this thing called inflation. Minimum wage went up and the simple fact of the matter is this, it costs more money now days to do business than it did just a few years ago.
Investing a lot of money in Kinect is not Arrogant. Its actually a smart move if Kinect is indeed a success. It will draw in casuals and eventually some of these casuals will turn into "core" players and then that will help sell more hardcore games in the not to distant future.
The pricing for Kinect isn't so bad really, it could be better but the Wii ballance board isn't much cheaper and apparently this will be able to do so much more. Either way we will know how things turn out in a few months and then we will know if it was worth the investment that MS has put into Kinect. As for me, I hope it turns a hefty profit and brings as many casuals as possible over to the 360. No matter what anyone says, IMHO it will only be a good thing. The more people who own a 360 the better.
