I just read the title of this thread again.
It is not like the sports titles just invented updating annually this generation. That started with the SNES (SFC)/Genesis (Mega Drive) era. Before that, it was periodic.
As for sequels -- they were not yearly because production and such took longer. But look at how many games had multiple incarnations/releases even in the NES/SMS era. And Mega Man -- with six NES games -- pretty much was annual releases from Capcom.
So there is nothing new. Just things that work getting done by all.
