Forums - Sony - Initial Move : Sports Champions Reviews are up!

Didn't see a thread for this?

Seems like the reviews are generally positive thus far.  Hasn't deterred me from buying this day one yet.  So far, so good.

Joystiq  (4.5 / 5)  "Sports Champions is a great pack-in for Move and well worth buying on its own if you go the a la carte route with the hardware. You'll spend a good chunk of each day playing it and hoping for a sequel. (Can we have bowling and baseball, please?)"

Kotaku    "Sports Champions managed to give me a level of intuitive motion gaming I've rarely found, even on the Wii's MotionPlus, and did so in a way I found oddly addictive and pleasantly fun."

IGN (7.5 / 10 )  "Sports Champions is fun, but it’s rough around the edges. The gameplay is solid for the most part and will provide you with some good times and there’s a lot for a single player to do, but it’s not going to feel fresh for long. This is another motion controlled mini-game collection. It’s a good one, but it’s not taking the genre anywhere new."

Lol @ IGN talking about innovation , yeah that Dead Rising is sooo off and well , all their reviews.

I live for the burn...and the sting of pleasure...
I live for the sword, the steel, and the gun...

- Wasteland - The Mission.

i dont think lower scores will stop me from buying it, all they are gonna say is "the gameplay isnt original" which we already knew from the begining... but that isnt a good reason to take points off lol

Getting this to have at least one mini game collection for when I have people over. Also I really want to try out the gladiator fighting as I hope it will provide a window into how the next Elder Scrolls game can be :)

  • Pros

Accurate motion sensing. Bundled with fun titles that demonstrate advanced motion sensing and control.

  • Cons

Launch titles will likely appeal only to casual gamers.

  • Bottom Line

Sony may not be first to the motion-gaming party, but the PlayStation Move technology is a step above the Wii—now if developers tap the system to produce more compelling game titles, we’ll have a true winner.

  • editor rating very good

Not bad for what is in some areas simply a higher resolution version of an existing Wii title.

Reading a number of reviews I'm seeing one interesting element though, most reviews are saying the Move is definately more accurate more of the time than the Wii (including Plus).  I have a Wii and like it a lot, so for me the Move has to deliver a somewhat better technical capability and it sounds like it does.

The gladiator game sounds pretty cool from the Kokatu review.

I've just changed my pre-order from one Move and Sub to to try it out to two Moves on the basis of the reviews indicating the Gladitor game is great (and Archery too) with two Moves.

I'll give holding the Dualshock a try first and pick up a sub-controller later.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

PlayStation Move Review

To answer the first question: Yes. PlayStation Move absolutely does work. Sports Champions is lag-free and movement is 1:1 99 per cent of the time - sometimes eerily so.
Take 'Disc Golf' (golf with a Frisbee) for example. Using the Move's trigger to pick up the disc, the camera zooms into a first person perspective, leaving a white hand representing your own. We stood for a while tilting the Frisbee in every direction, attempting to spot even the most minuscule limitation, misrepresentation or lack of synchronisation.

There wasn't any. The little white hand even trembled slightly at 1am when we were trying to throw the perfect "drive" while wired on coffee.

The Move also recognises when you've changed your stance to execute a forehand flick from the side, rather than a backhander across the chest. The variety of shots available is crucial for curling the disc around obstacles - which you can do by tilting your throw (just like real life). You'll also slam it into the dirt more times than you'd like (just like real life).
// Overview
Verdict
Sony's motion control gets beyond being a gimmick. We found ourselves constantly itching for "one more go".
Uppers
  Great to hold, look at
  PS Eye rarely loses sight
  1:1 control and responsiveness
  Motion control with high-end production
Downers
Power recognition plays a limited part
High-speed action sometimes (rarely) confuses it

In conclusion

The Move isn't for everyone, but now that I've been playing with the Move for a while, it's becoming harder to go back to the Wii. The Move is just more accurate, it gives you a better range of motion, and the PlayStation 3 is a graphical powerhouse. It used to be that you'd tolerate the Wii's graphics in order to use its motion controls. Now you don't have to.

PlayStation 3 games can now use the standard controller, the Move, or some combination of the two with the Navigation controller. Hopefully developers step up and support the system properly, because as of right now the PlayStation 3 can do it all. It's just a matter of releasing games that are worth playing.

The combination of PlayStation Network and retail titles built from the ground up for the Move and existing (Move-patched) games like PGA Tour 11, Heavy Rain, and Killzone 3 really gives Sony's library a boost. Still, I didn't find that one game that will make you want to run out and buy the hardware the second it's released. There are many games that are fun, some games where Move control adds to the experience, but the hardware is not a necessary addition to the PlayStation 3 yet. That's going to take time.

The Move isn't a brand new platform for Sony, as Kinect is for Microsoft's Xbox 360; it's another option for developers to play with. By adding Move support to a game while having the ability to keep standard controls, publishers can support the Move hardware without having to bank on it. This also means that developers can freely port between the Wii and the PS3, or give their existing Wii games a nice graphical overhaul and a new release to broaden their market. That's an advantage the Kinect won't be able to match; it's all or nothing with Microsoft's take on motion control.

Sony did many things right with the Move, and now it's up to the market. Do PlayStation 3 fans want motion controls, and can the developers deliver the necessary titles? We'll be posting more Move-related material in the coming days. For now, if you have any questions about the hardware, feel free to ask them in the comments.

Aurich's graphic design note: For the uninitiated, the opening image of this story is a mashup of HBO's guilty pleasure True Blood. And yes, the scene in question is as awesome and hilarious as it looks.

LOL "Unknown" genre

9's out of 10 seem a little over enthusiastic IMO. But I guess I'll wait and see if/when I get to playing it.

"It used to be that you'd tolerate the Wii's graphics in order to use its motion controls. Now you don't have to." Would it be wrong to say OUCH! I think this is coming from someone who isn't really a Nintendo fan but got into Wii for the motion controls, so the comment isn't exactly comiong from a neutral/objective position.

I'm thinking it'll Meta in the low 8's high 7's

CVG is pretty even across the board, and yea i do not agree with that comment at all, but from his perspective, just like any reviewer is their opinion on it.

one i do not agree with they way he went about that statement but he's refering to the point is that mainly from the perspective if your a Wii owner than this is a pretty good upgrade if you want more fidelity to your graphic's and resolution. which may be true for some while other's may not care at all.
