Not saying this is right or anything, but the dude was drunk at the time.

I would never consider this a hate crime, tho he SHOULD receive all the stigma/punishment that goes with that.  No reason to attack someone in this manner, period and I hope he gets full fisted by the law.

When your drunk things you would normally keep to yourself surface, could be the case with this guy. If he was sober the cab ride could have gone without incident.

Exactly. I myself, no matter how drunk I got would ever say anything racist to a taxi driver, let alone attack anyone. If you're the type of person that gets agressive when drunk then you shouldn't drink to excess.

And what does the happy now mean?

It was to the people making a bigger deal out the mosque being built in NY more so than it actually deserved, revving up peoples prejudices and more than likely causing this to happen.  It is a freaking shame.

it is a shame, this is supposed to be a place where you can live without being afraid to express your beliefs. Is it me or do I smell another civil war, this country has been divided so much lately.

I wouldn't put the blaim on people that oppose the building of the mosque. They were simply using their freedom of speech to oppose something, this guy attacked someone over another person being a member of a certain religion. The blaim is one him, not on the people that were simply speaking, it is people that step over the line and attack people that are to blaim.

Sure it probably helped spur him on, but unless these people were saying "we oppose the mosque attack any muslim you see", I can't see the issue. Thats like saying Salman Rushdie is responsible for all the people that were killed over the the Satanic Versus and not the Muslims that thought taking offense meant they had the right to kill people.

Offending people really shouldn't matter, all it is is words, a person that gets so hurt that they attack people are the issue. They should harden up and remember that in the real world crying like a baby shouldn't and thankfully isn't a respectible response (its simply an appeal to emotions and isn't a persuasive argument ever) and then using that as justification for violent is doubly worse.
