Scientific research shows the human mind is wired to think about God.  Beyond this, seeing the universe begs the question of how it came about, and things in it have an apparent order that drives people to ponder who may of created things in it.

As far as choice goes, it is argued if you can choose otherwise, then it is a choice, when if you initially didn't choose fom the start.

God keeps coming up as a concept among humans for numerous reasons, which I touched on in my post.  This does not mean there is a God, just religion and the pondering of God follows the human experience.  Even people who won't do formal religion, or say they are religious will still get involved with God concepts.  It is also possible some people ave brains more receptive to the concept of God.

At the very least, the concept of God is a concept humans like to play around with.

@OP
1st - your parents aren't going to kick you out... that is 99% for sure.
2nd - your disbelief is better than changing religious beliefs (in the point of view of a religious person), so i think you are OK.
3rd - you should prepare some reasons to reply to your parents questions and avoid religious holidays to give that news!

me as a believer, its harder to discuss with people with different doctrine than with people without beliefs. so i believe it will be easier for your parents to discuss with you, your disbelief other than a totally different doctrine.

Sapphi Snake-

Further to my previous post offering advice, I also think it's a VERY good idea to read up on the scientific wonders of nature, evolution, archeology, history and the universe. You see when you arm yourself to the teeth with just a small fraction of the enormous mountains of evidence to refute religious beliefs you will be much more comfortable not only in your atheist beliefs but also when debating the God squad who you will find yourself debating at some point now that your an atheist and trust me you will bump into Bible bashers throughout your life. And with the knowledge at hand you will utterly decimate them piece by piece. However bear in mind you believe in reason and evidence while they believe in faith.

I like your optimism

Damn, to think I was gonna tell them at Christmas morning when they were opening up their presents.

Thanks for your opinion.

Yeah, that's the main reason why I find it futile to debate with religious people.

Wow...and most humans also ponder about fairies and ghosts too. This seems like one of the most worthless books I've ever heard of. Seriously, who gives these people funds?

Worth watching imo. Richard Dawikins a bit of a weed, he's not a very good debater and I don't think he's quite grasped the political aspect of religion but his commentry as in when he narrates direct to the viewer is great.

Have you joined any atheist forums, groups etc? In the UK we have a British Humanist Association and the National Secular Society both of which I'm a member. I also joined the Council of Ex Muslims of Britain. I've met a lot of like minded people and it helps.

I don't know of any such organisations in Romania. There are very few atheists here. I could try joining some forums though (I don't usually join such specific forums). If you could PM some links to some good ones I'd appreciate it.
