I wonder if Microsoft could unleash that extra speed with software?  It would surely help the front end

The advantage of consoles, compared to PCs, is that game developers have a fixed target and can thus optimize for that target and know it just works on all units out there. So it wouldn't make sense for Microsoft (or Sony or Nintendo) to upgrade their systems mid-generation as it would just risk bringing in the same kind of issues keeping people from PC gaming. For instance old games might start behaving wrongly due to the new system specs or new games might be targetted at the faster newer box and thus owners of the older versions get a bad experience.

They can't upgrade the chip. They would risk breaking some of the software running on it. This isn't a PC! Programs expect that every single Xbox 360 is the same in pretty much every single way and they rely on that for their optimisation.

No issues with the law. Only market segmentation issues. It would be like the DSi: all games would use the basic level of performance, but newer games could have more features when running on the new Xbox.

MS own the actual CPU and GPU designs for the console specifically so they can redesign them how they want.

I didn't say redesign, I said up the specs, as in make it a technologically more advanced console than previous models. If they wouldn't face any lawsuits for that, I wouldn't have said what I said. Hell, just look at Sony, they faced lawsuits for removing the Other OS. Microsoft would certainly face the same issue if people felt they got/have a lesser product than the next 360 owner.

Whether or not that's actually a legal issue is another matter, so I may have worded my original post wrong. Hopefully now, you understand.

No, the only people that had a right to be pissed were the ones that BOUGHT it with Other OS in it and had it taken away ... it has nothing to do with new owners ....

I'd rather the chips be more powerful and then underclocked. Less power comsumption and heat. Apple do it with the Iphone CPU's.

They couldn't let the slim be anymore powerful then the original Xbox 360 unless the extra power was for some Xbox 360 Slim Natal specfic cheaper SKU.
