Sony Ericsson bring the battle to MS with PSN on devices

February 22nd, 2010

I think they meant Aino xD

no Stringer was talking about not just the Aino line..lol

for one the xperia 10 can already remote access the PS3!

a)

Howard Stringer CEO of Sony Ericsson-

“PSN is no secret weapon. Leveraging PSN we are building a new network service that will connect many more network enabled product including Sony Bravias, Viaos and Blu-ray players. To satisfy the demand for more open systems and to broaden the array of network devices connected to our network services we are committed to extending that service to Sony Ericsson mobile phones. As part of these initiatives we are also exploring consistent user interfaces across Sony Ericsson products to ensure a seamless and integrated experience for the consumer.”

With Ericsson side of joint venture taking over day to day operations of Sony Ericsson, Sony’s Chairman, CEO and President Sir Howard Stringer get’s the supervisory Chairman of the Board spot at SE, replacing current Ericsson CEO Carl-Henric Svanberg.

Nordberg went on to say

In the past, there was no tie-up between us [Sony Ericsson], the PSP platform and Sony, but you can expect to hear much more about that. Sir Howard Stringer’s [chairman of Sony] presence here is no coincidence.”

so if Sony Ericsson phones will be able to acces PSN,what do you think that will be mainly for?

Games?

yea I think it will be mainly for Games!

:D

not really

SONY has said in the past and on CES this year

that they are going to use PSN as their main online network across all devices

but it will be limited

like they spoke of introducing PSN on bravia for movie downloading and retal and netflix and other features

it could provide spones music downloading service

i think thing's have changed..for one :

the ceo:

Sony Ericsson CEO hints at PSP Phone at MWC 2010
<script type="text/javascript">// <script src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js" type="text/javascript">

Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg has revealed the company is working much more closely with its parent Sony, and is focusing firmly on the home environment for its future phones.

Nordberg said that future Sony TVs, PCs and stereos, and Sony Ericsson mobiles will all have a common communications interface – DLNA – and that Sony Ericsson’s phones will be much more tightly integrated into Sony’s home entertainment product range.

Nordberg went on to say

In the past, there was no tie-up between us [Sony Ericsson], the PSP platform and Sony, but you can expect to hear much more about that. Sir Howard Stringer’s [chairman of Sony] presence here is no coincidence.”

So, Sony Ericsson PSP phone anyway? It’s been rumoured for years now, makes so much sense, and with Microsoft integrating XBox Live onto its Windows Phone 7 OS, is ultimately inevitable.

the point is he listed the PSP as tie-up sell...more games is the goal..the more software sales the better.

the fact that Android is going into the bravia line of TV's which means not just TV function's but also application's and Games!

remember 70% of all aplications on the iphone is Games!

Sony ceo's see this. the closest challenger to that % is Android at this time Android has surpassed even the number of devices of the iphone and the Ipad that are in the market, and i phone was first to the market. that means there are more devices which run android on them to take advantage of software sales than there are iphone and ipads.

Sony want's a inroad into that market.

sure it could happen and will happen in the future

i was just pointing at your comment which seemed to convey that not much else could be done with PSN on other devices except games

i would actually love for PSP2 phone to come out as i have it as my next in my phone purchase line.thought it could launch this year's end but lets hope again for TGS show

the reasons of it launching this year or not are below:

SONY promised 10 year PSP plan and if PSP2 releases then,we know that it will be very tough for it to last another 4 years and so they will release it next year when PSP has another 3 years promise only to complete

sony could release PSP2 worldwide just to get a head start on 3DS by launching it this fall

sony could launch psp2 only in japan this year then later in other regions

sony could launch a psp phone to gather market data like psp go before launching psp2 next year

abt the Iphone games, most of the games on it are super super casual games.heck,PSN even PSN Mini's considered in the same category have more quality.

PSP and DS games are far more complex and different and more concetrated on gaming alone unlike iphone or any other phone game

also integrating with Android might harm SONY itself

once they join lwt other companies use their games then sony might lose HW sales which they could solely have by a good standalone device by themselfs

also once developers start developing on multiple devices they might not even consider sony after certain time and just start porting their games to other android phones of the PSN standard which again will not help sony and PS name might degrade as people will get the same content on all android devies

also android is customizable and SONY wouldn't too much customization with its own setup which could lead to piracy as PS1 emulators have already once been made to work on android phones and sony got it removed of the andriod marketplace

Of course they are. That's the whole plan with going to bed with Google and Android.

Next Android phones with Android 3.0 will have PSN access and next big Sony/Ericsson phone will be the PSP-Go style phone we already were hinted.

EDIT: and those of you arguing against this move really have no long term strategy in mind. Its a brilliant move and will hurt MS and Apple, as well as Nintendo to a smaller extent.

Btw, as a Android lover and a PSN user, I'd certainly purchase an phone that is akin to the PSPGo. It just makes sense from any angle.

I dunno, what would be the reason to buy the next PSP if the PSN was on every phone?  I realize that Sony probably has something up its sleeve to entice gamers to buy the next PSP but whatever that is looks pretty uncertain at this point...

Cool.. Sony's version of Live Anywhere.

PSN enabled deviced can share almost all of the same items as they should. Having the games, movies, etc all available to any PSN device simply gives Sony a far larger market to sell to.

However, the PS3 and subsequent PS4 as well as eventual PSP2 won't share the same games as there will simply be big differences in the capabilities of the hardware.

All Sony is doing is leveraging the best tools it has across all of its available platforms. Its offering a set of features that really gives it desirability beyond not only iPhone, but also other Android phones. On top of that you must acknowledge that the vast majority of services on PSN now and future are aimed at the mass market, not simply gaming core. Therefore it makes more sense to have this on TVs, phones, etc, than simply Playstation devices (which are primarily purchased for gaming by gamers).

If this goes well, which I think it will, there will be a strong push to not even do another PSP as a standalone gaming device. To me that makes sense as people are more inclined to want a cell phone (they'd buy anyways) with gaming features than a gaming machine only. Especially, with the 3DS coming that is going to be a beast of a machine with its demonstrated feature set as well as already huge 3rd party support. If I were Sony, I would strongly consider focusing on uber powerful Android/psp phones.

I know come this holiday if one is available to Verizon, that will be the Android I pick up. Probably before a 3DS.

It makes sense because, Sony already has a Playstation stack already working on Android!

"“We have done extensive skinning of the Android platform. because we really wanted to make it a bespoke experience,” says George Arriola, head of user experience for Sony Ericcson.

Sony’s UXP interface attempts to do the same thing as rivals like Motorola’s MotoBLUR: namely, aggregate social networking feeds such as Facebook and Twitter into one stream, integrate that data with your phone address book and contacts, and personalize the multimedia experience.

“We took a very sophisticated PlayStation middleware and shrunk it to fit the Android OS,” says Arriola.
