No Eternal Darkness or System Shock 2?! oh well, each to their own I guesss.

Why no Eternal Darkness love?

Not only does that game do a good job of scaring you, it always screws with you the entire game.  I actually have two great memories from that game:

1) This was the first game I played with surround sound.  I remember walking around the mansion while playing this game in the dead dark with my roommate.  All of sudden we start hearing foot steps and creaking and we were just scared to death.  That game did such an awesome job with atmosphere that we even started seeing things and jumping at shadows.  Also, I'm a giant pussy when it comes to scary games...

2) One of the sanity meter tricks got me good.  I walked into a room with like six enemies surrounding me and then all of a sudden it said my controller had become unplugged while the enemies started mauling me.  I literally jumped out of my chair and dove straight for my Gamecube trying to get the controller plugged back in.  Finally the screen flashed and I realized the game had just been screwing with me.

God I love that game.

F.E.A.R. and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories scared the shit out of me at moments.

Not even a mention for F.E.A.R.

Yeah Condemned is scary and also Dead Space.

Even though it was a horrible game, Ju-On: The Grudge was pretty scary the first time I played it.

I also remember this one level in Half-Life 2 when you go to this abandoned city with people that had little monster thingys on their heads and this one crazy guy was helping you. It scared the crap out of me. I was so happy when I got out of there.

STALKER is better than metro 2033

Time for hype

Silent Hill probably deserves #1 but Eternal Darkness definitely deserves to be in the top 5! The atmosphere and sound in that game is superb. And don't get me started on the Sanity Meter...

It's a shame Nintendo haven't made a sequel.

*dreams of Eternal Darkness 2 with WMplus and Vitality Sensor support*

Bioshock isn't very scary but Dead Space gave me a nightmare or too. I also didn't play Fallout 3 for a month after I killed the first super mutant because i was scared of it. (It was like 2am).
