This 3D technology as is has been around for 20 years and the idea behind it is 100 years old. The only reason we are talking about it now is because Sony, Samsung and Holywood realised they can make money off it and are trying to sell you expensive 3D hardware but are not providing adequate 3D content.
If you want impressive 3D, you have to research and look outside the mainstream box and have technical interest in the technology.
There are really a lot of cool applications for this tech (Google Earth 3D for example) and it really doesn't have to cost a lot at all...but no one is making money if you don't buy a 2000 dollar TV, so you don't hear about other 3D applications.
