Forums - Sony - Are all 2.5" HDD's a guaranteed fit?

I'm thinking about replacing my ps3's hdd (80gb model, only about 7gb's left because of movies/demos) and I read an article on CNET that said just about any 2.5" will fit.....is this true?

This is the one I'm looking at:

And one more quick random question:  Are ps3 repairs still $150-180'ish? Seems pretty insane if true :x  Does anyone know what specifically causes YLoD's on average? I'd reaaaaaally hate to spend all that cash to replace/fix a bricked ps3 : l

Im sure if you get a standard sized laptop HDD like from NewEgg it'll fit. Laptops are pretty standardised and im fairly sure there isn't much variance in the slot in HDD replacements from this standard.

Tease.

as long as the hdd is sata

back up your ps3 with external drive usb ect then restore it to ur new hdd its the only way you'll get ur saves that are protected back but only works on the same ps3 or by the data transfer but that requires 2 ps3s

yes repairs are still about $200 for ylod, overheating cycles, solders on all systems are lead free meaning there weaker than lead based u could prevent by changing thermal paste and fan, letting ur ps3 cool down in xmb before shutting off after intense gaming

there are plenty of 3rd partys that can fix ylod for 100-150 even the with the better method of reballing the cpu and gpu and saving ur info on ur hdd some are capital circuits, knights gaming, and gophermods sony doesnt not do this they give u another system or fix urs but they always reformat the hdd

just looked at the hdd u link i got the same one in mine works flawless and helps with loading some people experience problems with certain hdd that have higher cache than the original ones in ps3s like the one you link so its important to search before you buy

is that a 4 usb 80gb you got? or the 2

i think all 2.5" fit yes. If i was you I would opt for the 500gig for a bit more money. If you plan to store movies and tv show on your ps3, I would definitely recamend it.

Awesome, thanks for the replies.

Now to decide if I wanna get it anytime soon or not. I just bought SSFIV and the Wipeout HD bundle recently and trying to keep my wallet intact.

There are 9.5mm height 2.5" drives and 12.5mm drives, but any drive 500GB or less will be the standard 9.5mm height. Typically only the 1TB 2.5" drives are 12.5mm.

You can find 500GB drives for less than $60 on Newegg, so there's really no reason to go any lower in capacity.

PS3 repairs are $150 plus shipping/handling. If you haven't had any problems with your system, then basic things like letting it cool down after extended periods of running on high load (playing games, Folding, etc.) in the XMB before shutting it off, keeping the vents clear of dust (if your fans are running louder than usual, the console is running hot; heat sinks may be clogged up) and keeping the console ventilated (not in a closed cabinet) should prevent the overheating that leads to YLoD failures.
