US mobile gaming controller maker Zeemote, has put its new controller on Android and has announced an SDK to enable games developers to target Android with its Zeemote JS1.
The JS1 is a games controller which speaks via bluetooth to handsets which can be used like dedicated games consoles, plugged into a TV set using TV out ports. It means that handfuls of existing devices, mostly Nokia and Sony Ericsson handsets, can be temporarily used for TV based gaming.
But now overnight virtually all Android devices will be able to use the JS1 as long as JSI compatible games are on the devices. The Zeemote Android SDK supports Android versions 1.6 upwards and allows for any application to benefit from remote control, not just games. In some handsets the Zeemote is given away by the handset vendor, along with a few games, to promote gaming on their devices, which means the Zeemote has shipped in the millions.
Zeemote reckons that existing Android applications can be adapted in a matter of hours. Current Zeemote developers can download the SDK here.
Zeemote mentioned that developers will be able to download modified source code of the kwaak3 port project integrated with the Zeemote JS1 game. Kwaak3 is a version of Quake 3 adapted for Android. The JS1 offers analog quality game control and allows multi-player mobile gaming using two controllers on one device.
In the next few weeks Zeemote will announce a developer programme, which will provide comprehensive support, promotion and routes to market for game developers, and it says this will reach 100 million consumers.
Jim Adams, business development at Zeemote, said, “By adding the exciting Android SDK to our stable of supported platforms, we are able to give developers an excellent way in which to make their applications really stand out from the crowd. The Android community is proving itself to be wildly creative, pushing the boundaries of convention for mobile applications. When combined with the Zeemote JS1 Controller we expect to see some radical application creativity coming out of the Android community.”
