What shortage? :/ Well I guess the shortage I never knew about is officially over... Btw why would a company like Sony screw up logistics this bad? I thought they were a hardware company and all that.

In the US it was in short supply do to the trasition from PS3s with a 65nm chipset and ones with a 45nm chipset. Takes time to change your production flows fully. Especially considering they chose to do it right after the holidays when stock was naturally low as it was.

But surely they would take that into account and only withdraw 65nm production once 45nm production had started to ramp up?

Not if they are built on the same line, plus you have to consider retooling the factories. Its just as simply as you think.

The PS3 motherboard is identical, all they changed were a few chips. Its not like they stopped producing TVs and started producing Blu Ray players on the same production line.

You know precisely what was involved in this? Wow, You must have some serious insider knowledge.

The GPU is produced on its own package with the GDDR3. To change from a 65nm to 40nm chip all they have to do is change the package. The only reason why they would have to have shortages is if they screwed up the logistics and either failed to produce enough 65nm parts or if they are slower to ramp the 40nm parts than expected. The packages are pretty interchangeable, all they have to do is substitute one for the other when they have enough supply.

You assume too much. You have no idea what else they  could have revised while they were working on the new GPU.

Point is that its a known fact it was in very short supply and that coincided with the end of the holidays and the change to a revised system.

It could be:

  • old GPU package -> new motherboard
  • new GPU package -> new motherboard
  • new GPU package -> old motherboard
  • old GPU package -> old motherboard

Interchangeable...

Or it could just be that Sony screwed up supply because it can take weeks to get chips back from the foundry, I believe it can take as long as 16 weeks. They misjudged.

its 40nm from 65 chip for the GPU the CPU was always 45nm once slim came out not that the extra 5nm matters just saying thats all

45nm->40nm matters. Even being a half node, 40nm represents a reduction of about a 20% of the chip size.

i know it matters but i just felt nerdy pionting it out, also they did other things besides the gpu size change

also rumor around the halls here is that theres some new models coming out in the fall maybe with move launch not the recent cech 2500 white ps3 that released in JP the rumor is that it will have 32nm cell and more usb ports to accommodate moves camera along with wireless N support so maybe the shortages will come back
